something new you've done in the past month

[personal profile] othellia 2013-04-22 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
So I missed the internet this weekend to go rock climbing in the wilderness for the first time. It was a blast but now my arms are so sore.

Any cool things you've done for the first time recently f!s?

Well, this isn't the first time but I haven't done this for years and years but I've started a webcomic.

What's first about it is that this is first time I've hit page ten and haven't been bored as to where the story line is going. Usually, I'm pretty good with opening scenes and then sputter out or get bored with my own work with a, "Now what?" But this hasn't happened yet. I'm still on the first chapter but I have three fully thumbnailed chapters mapped and written out. The only thing that is keeping me from doing everything at once is my speed with a pencil.

Ooh, good luck and keep at it. I've tried to make a webcomic about once or twice, and I know that first-five-pages rush. Endurance and perseverance are everything.

What's it about/the genre if you don't mind me asking?

Well, you can read it here. It's called Hurlyburly and it's a grab bag fantasy/horror/comedy/drama about a woman who wakes up one morning to find a Demon in her bedroom, a ghost in her hallway and an angel on her lawn. (So, far, we have met the Demon and the Ghost. The Angel is a few pages away.) Unfortunately, she has no memory of the night before that led to this and is in complete denial about the whole thing.

The past month was boring, but in the NEXT month I will:

1. Drive
2. Be a figure of authority to high schoolers on an overnight trip (ahahahaha)
3. Go to India!

So those will be new things :D

That's awesome! I've always wanted to get into rock climbing but it's an activity I find completely intimidating. Usually I'm okay diving in head first and clueless with outdoorsy stuff, but Idk what it is about rock climbing.

Sadly I have not done anything too exciting lately. I took my dog to a new trail for hiking, but that's about it.

Dyed my hair.

By which I mean bleaching streaks into it and dyeing them purple and green.

I did this last week in preparation for the weekend, and am still going :D every time a little bit of my green or purple hair happens to fall into my field of vision. (And I'm thinking of bleaching a couple more streaks and adding some red or blue...)

Started taking my cat for walks. Though right now they're more "meanders" than "walks"; we're still learning.

<3 rock climbing. I'm glad you enjoyed it! I have a lovely place about an hour's drive away from my place, so we can go on day trips. Outdoor climbing is so much fun, and the people! So nice. Not a fan of how crowded it is though.

While on an insect collecting trip with classmates, I finally learned the proper way to take a kick sample of benthic invertebrates and actually find something, thanks to the instructor's really awesome grad student. I'm still not very good at it, but this trip was a good chance to practice. And the instructor outright gave me a beautiful caddisfly larva in its case and a nice big crane fly maggot, which he picked up in his fingers and put right in my hand. (The collection is for a grade, so any help in amassing it is great to have.) Since I'm pretty squeamish about all maggots--but especially ones the size of my little finger--I felt I was making a little progress in becoming a decent field ecologist.
