I don't have a source on hand, but I read about it when it happened... and what happened was some of the staff made an unofficial episode commentary video on youtube, in which they speculated that Marceline and PB possibly used to be a couple and asked whether viewers agree. They got lots of positive fan response, but they had to take the video down and... I don't actually remember anyone getting fired, but it could have been.

However, it said that the problem was that the staff had done this video and consulted with fans of the show without permission from the rest of the writing team, so it was some kind of etiquette breach that got them in trouble?

Oh, I think one other person on the team said something like "no they never had a romantic relationship they were just friends" in response, but that wasn't an official position either.

Er, my original point being, nobody was fired because they made an episode with lesbian subtext. (Or if they were, everyone involved went to great lengths to pretend it was for other reasons.)
