Yeah, I've never done BB, but I've done art exchanges, and this is a large part of why I stopped. It was...sweet, y'know. Little gold "You Tried" sticker, and I did appreciate that someone put that effort into drawing something for me (and I did get some nice art), but man, it takes me a long time make a finished piece, and if the exchange result looked like something a mother would stick on the fridge, well, I would feel a little disappointed. (Which isn't to say I got disappointed if it didn't look AMAZING or whatever, there are a lot of levels of skill in fanart, and people who can't draw all that realistically can still make a pretty cool piece.)

Now, every now and again, I'd have people who'd draw art for me of my favorite characters or fic "just because" and that never failed to make me smile, whatever it looked like, because darn it, that's sweet. But if it were some kind of "exchange" then yeah, I might feel less than ecstatic.

Then again, it depends on the fan community to. I've been a part of a lot of communities where the fans were great, but not a lot of them were really artists, but we were all friends, so hey, it's all in fun.

This. It's not like I'd cry myself to sleep if I got this fanart in an exchange, but my heart would sink a little because I'd have to fake my squee while still sounding sincere because I don't want to hurt anyone's feelings.

This is exactly why I seriously hesitate at getting involved in exchanges anymore. I totally appreciate that someone put their free time into something for me but... once bitten twice shy, I guess.

When you put a ton of effort into something, polish it up and all... and you get a (in my case, because I've only done fic exchanges) two hundred word drabble that hasn't been put through basic spell check... well, it kills the excitement.

Yeah. But it's not like you can really instill a quality control. Well, you can, but places that do that get a reputation for being Terrible People. (I was a member of Hogwarts Elite back in the early days, and later I was baffled to find out that it had a reputation for being a Horrible Place, when really, for quite some time, it was a really pleasant, engaging place for great discussions and such that just expected a lot from its members).

But for the average BB, I doubt it. I mean, a forum I was on used to do Secret Santa, and mostly it was folks who never drew drawing art for people, but that falls more under the category of "among friends, who cares about quality?" And I guess I see most BBs being a little more like that.

Truth is, I'd love to see some more Avengers Reverse BBs, because that looks like oodles of fun to me.
