this isn't very helpful, since it sounds like the parents may be abdicating some of their responsibility as parents--plus they've apparently let the OP fall into the role of family mediator and placator, so OP may have reason to worry about what could happen in their absence.

It works both ways. OP will not be forced into the role of parenting, and the parents will be forced to suck it up and accept their responsibilities.
