Re: Bizarrely Popular fandoms/pairings?

Stiles/Derek. As much as I love the pairing (from Teen Wolf), I just don't get the monstrous hype.

When I was watching the series I expected Stiles/Scott, Scott/Jackson, and/or Scott/Derek to be the most popular slash pairings. When I discovered that it was Sterek I was completely blown.

Still am, really.

Also: Phil/Clint from The Avengers, Remus/Lupin from Harry Potter, and Kakashi/Iruka from Naruto. I just don't get any of this, and yet they're all so popular.

Pretty sure Phil/Clint is a result of the phenomena to pair the spares.

I'm not sure about that, since it seems to be the primary pairing for a lot of people. I think a lot of people like the agent/handler dynamic, with the power imbalance involved. (I'm mostly guessing though, since it's not my ship.)

That's why I ship it but less on the power imbalance and more on the Team/Family aspect that the agent/handler dynamic can have. I also like the idea of this very straight-laced character being such a bonafide badass.

Nah. It's the result of a couple authors writing some really, really good fic early on when there was a fic drought (Thor wasn't good for slash fans because the only readily available slash pairing in the movie was incest, and that isn't for everyone). The ball started rolling, and then more authors wrote more awesome fic, and it spiraled from there. Also, most of the fans are generally nice. :)

Back when I still followed Naruto one of the only pairings I would read was Kakashi/Iruka. Usually I ship characters who have much more interaction and I didn't think it particularly made sense either but I didn't care. The reason I shipped Kakashi/Iruka was because I liked both characters and wanted to read about both; it was the obvious choice for me. (Some of the fic was quite good too, or I wouldn't have kept reading.)

I don't ship Phil/Clint but maybe some people feel similarly about it?

See, this is how I ship couples all the time. I'm also interested in exploring a romantic dynamic between the characters in fic that the source material isn't able to give me. Yes, most of my ship is based on a personal perception of wanting two people together but why the fuck not if the idea is appealing and FUN for me to play in?

Hey, I see no problem with it. At least half my ships aren't canon (probably a much larger percentage than that tbh) so I feel you; fandom is a great way of exploring never-gonna-happen romances.

People ship differently. Some people want lots of canon interaction and back-story to build on and some people don't care (or prefer) if there's no basis for their ship. There's no wrong way to ship.

Remus/Lupin? Selfcest was a big thing in HP fandom?
