Bizarrely Popular fandoms/pairings?

(Anonymous) 2013-04-23 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Have you ever seen a ship or a fandom that just astounds you with its popularity? I was on tumblr the other night and I somehow ended up on the Kevedd tag (Kevin/Edd from Ed Edd n Eddy) and I just...holy cow it's such a popular tag! It's probably updated like at least once every five minutes. I had no idea people still cared so much for a silly cartoon that ended years ago. I don't dislike it or anything, I'm just...confused

I wonder why that show is getting such a resurgence...

It's been said before for Teen Wolf, but Sterek. I still do not see what that's about, other than liking the idea of "unconventionally attractive, awkward person gets conventionally attractive, broody hunk of a man thing." And being completely willing to pull the concept out of thin air, because it's certainly not supported in the show.

I'm sure I've mentioned it here before, but I was totally surprised upon realizing that these two don't even seem to like each other in the show.

I don't like Sterek either but I see why people gravitated towards it. Like you said, Derek has the tall dark and broody thing going on that always reels in fangirls and Stiles is the snarky everyman who talks back to him and gets on his last nerve. Foe yay at its finest. And with a lot of fans not really caring much for Scott's personality, Sterek might have been one of the few slash pairings available early on in the show.

personally, I'm disappointed that there isn't more Sheriff or Finstock fics (or Sheriff/Finstock)

Sterek is popular not for the actual characters but for what fandom makes them to be. It's the classic broody/emotionally constipated hunk paired with the nerdy hyperactive talkative emotionally more mature one.

It was an issue of a few people pulling the concept out of thin air (probably based solely on their own attraction), writing decent/hot stories, creating clever gifs, and a lot of people wanting a pairing or fandom to join in on. I understand that much. What I don't understand are the die hards who loved the fanon ->jumped to watch the show and are fooling themselves into twisting every interaction and utterance to support their imaginary pairing.

over in South Park fandom, Craig and Tweek is pretty damn popular considering they've only had a handful of episodes where they even acknowledge each other. I'm not complaining--it's the only one I ship--but I will admit that it's basically a crack ship.

I feel like that's a sort of "pair the weird spares" sort of situation xD I remember it being the popular beta-ship in a lot of fics, back when I was in the fandom for a bit.

Stiles/Derek. As much as I love the pairing (from Teen Wolf), I just don't get the monstrous hype.

When I was watching the series I expected Stiles/Scott, Scott/Jackson, and/or Scott/Derek to be the most popular slash pairings. When I discovered that it was Sterek I was completely blown.

Still am, really.

Also: Phil/Clint from The Avengers, Remus/Lupin from Harry Potter, and Kakashi/Iruka from Naruto. I just don't get any of this, and yet they're all so popular.

Pretty sure Phil/Clint is a result of the phenomena to pair the spares.

Back when I still followed Naruto one of the only pairings I would read was Kakashi/Iruka. Usually I ship characters who have much more interaction and I didn't think it particularly made sense either but I didn't care. The reason I shipped Kakashi/Iruka was because I liked both characters and wanted to read about both; it was the obvious choice for me. (Some of the fic was quite good too, or I wouldn't have kept reading.)

I don't ship Phil/Clint but maybe some people feel similarly about it?

Remus/Lupin? Selfcest was a big thing in HP fandom?

Kakashi/Iruka. I like the pairings and there's enough connection between the characters that it isn't completely weird but I was surprised at how much the ship blew up.

Sam/Gabriel from Supernatural.

Just ... what? Why?

Re: Bizarrely Popular fandoms/pairings?

(Anonymous) 2013-04-24 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
Sam/Gabriel actually makes sense when you think about the fandom. Most people ship Dean/Cas, and they don't want Sam to be "left out" so they ship him with Gabriel...even though they don't really have the chemistry Dean and Cas do to put it lightly, and Gabriel tormented him by making him watch his brother die over and over again. Gabriel is a popular character and an angel, so why not give Sam an angel as well instead of just making him play yenta for Dean and Cas?

Sam isn't shipped with his female love interests because, from what I've seen, the fandom doesn't seem to like his female love interests (Amelia received a rather cool reaction), and Ruby turned out to be evil, and people seem to like Jessica well enough so they might pair them together in Dean/Cas AUs occasionally, but...she died first episode so she won't work in a canon-verse sense, and she doesn't exactly have much of a personality.

Most Sam/Gabriel shippers aren't "Sam girls" from what I've seen. People who prefer Sam to Dean tend to ship Wincest (since that's who Sam interacts the most with) or Sam/Cas (since they have a more stable relationship than Sam and Gabriel, although Dean is canonically closer to Cas).

So yeah, the reason for Sam/Gabriel is Dean/Cas pretty much. ....I don't know why I bothered to type all this up.

Why the hell is Poirot/Hastings so popular?.. Never understood.

Re: Bizarrely Popular fandoms/pairings?

(Anonymous) 2013-04-24 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
i'm not in the fandom, just a fan of Christie's books... and i don't get why you would ship Poirot with ANYONE, tbh.

i guess i just always read him as "bachelor for life and happy to be that way."

Re: Bizarrely Popular fandoms/pairings?

(Anonymous) 2013-04-24 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
I...always read Poirot as asexual. >>;; And...yeah, idk. Just not interested in *anyone* like that.

Guy/Natalia. I mean, Guy/anybody female is still boggling because the dude's afraid of women, and Natalia/anybody but Asch is just...what. She is madly in love with Asch, if you haven't noticed, not to mention that she was a complete and utter bitch to him the entire time prior to the game because he was a servant, and while he was nothing but chivalrous, he was still terrified of her, specifically. They got to be friends by the end, sure, but...still. What the hell?

In that same vein, I have no idea why Jade/Anise even exists. What is wrong with you, TOA fandom.

Re: Bizarrely Popular fandoms/pairings?

(Anonymous) 2013-04-24 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
Aw, I like both of those pairings. Jade/Anise I prefer platonic, but I'm interested when it's romantic too. It's pretty twisted, but... sometimes I like twisted.

It's been too long since I played the game, so I can't remember why I like Guy/Natalia. But I don't think it's weird to ship him with women. Isn't there even a scene where he says himself that just because he's afraid of women doesn't mean he's not attracted to them, or something like that? Or am I remembering wrong...?

I was surprised by Darcy's popularity too. I like Darcy but not enough to read fic centered around her and as for shipping...nothing comes to mind.

Maybe it's one of those cases where fans like the character and built a headcanon around her that intrigued people and it snowballed from there.

I went into the Les Mis fandom expecting it to be all Valjean/Javert, all the time.

I was surprised to discover that the most popular pairing was Enjolras/Grantaire.

idk i just find it really baffling. maybe it's because they're both played by cute young actors in the film???

Every popular "pair the spares" pairing, but especially that Mystrade-thing in the Sherlock-fandom. As fas as I know, they haven't even met. Of course, there's nothing wrong with shipping characters who haven't met before (I have too many crossover ships judge), but I don't think a pairing like this warrants a portmanteau-name and a fanbase this huge.
