Sam/Gabriel actually makes sense when you think about the fandom. Most people ship Dean/Cas, and they don't want Sam to be "left out" so they ship him with Gabriel...even though they don't really have the chemistry Dean and Cas do to put it lightly, and Gabriel tormented him by making him watch his brother die over and over again. Gabriel is a popular character and an angel, so why not give Sam an angel as well instead of just making him play yenta for Dean and Cas?

Sam isn't shipped with his female love interests because, from what I've seen, the fandom doesn't seem to like his female love interests (Amelia received a rather cool reaction), and Ruby turned out to be evil, and people seem to like Jessica well enough so they might pair them together in Dean/Cas AUs occasionally, but...she died first episode so she won't work in a canon-verse sense, and she doesn't exactly have much of a personality.

Most Sam/Gabriel shippers aren't "Sam girls" from what I've seen. People who prefer Sam to Dean tend to ship Wincest (since that's who Sam interacts the most with) or Sam/Cas (since they have a more stable relationship than Sam and Gabriel, although Dean is canonically closer to Cas).

So yeah, the reason for Sam/Gabriel is Dean/Cas pretty much. ....I don't know why I bothered to type all this up.

Well yeah, duh, Sam/Gabriel exists for Dean/Cas. That's obvious. But why is it so popular? How can you have two people who only interact to mostly hate each other as your OTP? I always knew it was for Dean/Cas, but then I saw loads of people claim it to be their favourite ship and then I was just confused. How would they even work?

Wellll, honestly I think a lot of people gloss over the initial 'mentally tortured him' thing for the later approach of 'pain-in-the-ass but essentially good prankster'...he's smart-mouthed and a bit childish, so maybe he's like the non-incesty eqivalent of Dean? Honestly, I only ship it in AUs myself, but I can kind of see where they're coming from. Someone once argued to me, "Life is constantlly shittin on Sam, so Gabriel's torture doesn't seem worse to Sam than the others, and at least Gabe was doin it in theory for his benefit" Still needs an AU to work for me lol, but whatever floats yer boat I guess!

I know for me I like the contrast of giant but comparatively human / shrimpy little all-powerful archangel. Characterization doesn't come much into it honestly. <.<'

I've seen a Sabriel post that not only glazed over the torture, but kind of used it as a reasoning. Gabriel took all that time because he wanted Sam to understand.

And yeah, he did have a lesson behind it. But he has a long history of messing with people for shits and giggles, and I can't imagine even Gabriel saw Mystery Spot as something selfless.
