Re: Bizarrely Popular fandoms/pairings?

You've got to remember that both of those roles are played by actors in their mid-late 40s, and the average age of fandom skews very young. My tastes have broadened a bit now, but back when I was in my late teens and early 20s those guys would have been older than my dad and I wouldn't have given them a second glance.

Same shit happens in my fandom. The entire series is basically about the relationship between two dudes, one in his thirties and one in his fifties, with slash material to the max if one is looking for it, but nobody wants grandpa so the most popular ship is the thirty something dude with some other dude shares all of like three lines with.

CoD: Modern Warfare. The most popular pairing by far is Ghost/Soap (or Soap/Ghost) but Ghost only shows up for (part of) the second game and scarcely interacts with Soap, whereas the whole trilogy hinges around Soap's relationship with Price (the older guy). Yet, Price/Soap is scarcely extant. If Price is in a slash fic, it's almost always set when he was younger.

Fangirls gon' shallow. I really don't blame 18-year-olds for not wanting to write fic about someone definitely old enough to be their father and possibly their grandfather, though. Things look different when you're my age, but when I was a teenager 40- and 50- something year old men might as well have been corpses for all the sex appeal they held for me. I understand the phenomenon completely (as much as it irks my bff, a queer dude who likes older guys and wonders where all the Price fic/art is at).
