Stinky trash can

(Anonymous) 2013-04-24 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
I have a problem with the trash can in my bathroom at home. It stinks. Really stinks. The actual can stinks even when it is empty. I don't know why because I always line it with a plastic bag and just throw the bag out and get a new one. It's so entrenched that neither soap and water or vinegar and baking soda or airing the trash can out can get rid of it. The only thing that's worked is bleach, and I have to clean it two or three times before the smell is completely gone. Then the next time I change the bag, the smell is back. I don't put much in there beyond paper towels, hair, empty containers. I put my used feminine products in a separate bag. The bags themselves don't smell and the trash can beside my computer is identical with the same kind of bag in it and that one doesn't smell either. My old bathroom trash can never smelled. Even my kitchen trash can smells better and I put rotten food in it. I can't identify the stench either, just that it's sharp. Any suggestions as to what it is or what I can do about it? I could get another trash can, but I'm afraid it will have the same problem.

Air freshener, febreze, dryer sheet in the bottom of the can, sprinkle with holy water, salt and burn it, call a priest... what material is the can made of? Did you get it new or secondhand?

I've tried air fresheners and Febreze. I guess I'll try the rest.

The can is plastic. This is it: http://www.target.com/p/sterilite-small-frosted-plastic-oval-waste-basket-13-qt/-/A-13673933
I bought it brand-new, although not from Target. What I can't get over is that I bought two of them at the time and the other one is fine.

NAYRT

Get rid of it and buy a metal can. If you really want plastic, buy a different brand. Sterilite uses something in their plastics that sometimes breaks down and makes that smell. It happened to half the cans in our house, so we replaced them. Then it happened to another one and we finally just replaced them all with metal cans and we haven't had any problems since.

Interesting. I never heard of that about Sterlite before.

Soak it in bleach? Lysol the shit out of it?

Get a new trash can

It must be using some different kind of material that holds scents.

This. Seems cheaper than bleaching it every day.
