I just go for the pictures. I stay far away from tags were people actually talk and just follow certain people/blogs. I went from disliking Tumblr to checking it everyday. If something insightful was said somewhere, one of my friends will reblog it. That way I stay away from wank and (generally) stupidity. It also helps that I don't know how to do much other than find a blog/tag and reblog. I can't even find the dumb! Tumblr is awesome for these reasons.

Yeah, I agree that that's the best way. Most fandoms have a few people who are brave enough and have enough time on their hands to venture into the tags and reblog the good stuff, yet who are also sane enough to follow safely. Once you find those gems of users, you're set.
