Well thank goodness you're above all that...immaturity.

(No but seriously: I have read some of the most amazing, insightful meta, character analysis, and oh yeah, fanfiction, from folks on tumblr, some who were 30+ years old and some who were 17; get over yourself.)

Tumblr REALLY is what you make of it. Yeah there are the teen factions, but you can also find people who have good discussions and intelligent things to say.

I think this is true. I've never been particularly active in fandom or had a lot of presence on LJ/DW, but I'm still distinctly put off by the way tumblr reminds me of the most vapid and obnoxious of high school cliques. And I'm not even long past being a teenager.

I think the average age of faannish tumblerites probably is younger, and I think it does contribute to the overall level of discourse. I don't think that's necessarily a bad or insulting thing-- being a teenager, and wanting to talk to other teenagers in the way that teenagers talk, is OK! And it's cool that there's a space for people to do that! I just hope it doesn't come to monopolize fandom in the way it seems like it might, and wipe out the popularity and viability of other options.

I mean, ANY social media is "tailor made for teenagers". Honestly there aren't a lot of teens on my dash, probably because I don't follow any and most of my fandoms consist of people in their mid-twenties or older

it might be because of the particular fandom I spend most of my time in, but most of the people I have fallen in with on tumblr are insightful and fun to talk to. It's not so bad.

And I say that as someone who only recently even got a tumblr because I was also one of those people who felt like it was a horrible place full of teenagers making stupid jokes.

I just go for the pictures. I stay far away from tags were people actually talk and just follow certain people/blogs. I went from disliking Tumblr to checking it everyday. If something insightful was said somewhere, one of my friends will reblog it. That way I stay away from wank and (generally) stupidity. It also helps that I don't know how to do much other than find a blog/tag and reblog. I can't even find the dumb! Tumblr is awesome for these reasons.

I don't understand this mentality of "tumblr is full of teenagers therefore it sucks." In my experience, it doesn't matter where you go on the internet, when it comes to fandom there's always a lot of teenagers.

I don't use Tumblr, so I can't speak to your comments about that site specifically, but I do agree with your point that a little bit of lurking is sometimes beneficial when people enter fandom. Some of the etiquette and etc. is not necessarily intuitive, and I know I made a few blunders in my newbie days (as we all do).

*Shrug* I prefer the LJ system* to tumblr but that's merely because I like to converse with lots of people on a similar topic and tumblr isn't really made for that. However, tumblr is okay. I like it for what it is.

Anyway, you don't have to like tumblr. No one is forcing you. You sound a bit elitist, to be honest. But as long as you aren't being a jerk about it I don't really care.

*Not LJ itself.

Oh, no, not TEENAGERS! They are all the same, none of them could have any creativity or enthusiasm or discourse worth sharing! How dare they think they have a place in fandom?! I'll show them! *glares aggressively through nostalgia goggles*

"I really believe lurking until you learn a fair bit of fandom etiquettes prevents later idiocy, and on LJ it seemed to just be the norm."

I agree about lurking, but I'm also a paranoid toad so I wouldn't say that no one should be afraid of jumping in asap (unless they're made of terribleness).

But the last bit about the apparent composure of lj? lol no. Everything looks well-composed if you're going to compare it to the hyper tumblr folk.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-24 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
Ok, OP, I'll admit that at first I was like "oh no not another 'Tumblr sucks!' secret," but I actually really agree with what you're saying here.

I think it's really important to lurk a bit first, too. Otherwise, you don't know basic fandom etiquette like lj-cuts and warning for spoilers. And I really notice that the people on Tumblr seem to not know any of that. Spoilers are posted without a hint of a cut (yeah, I'm a spoilerphobe and yeah, I'm mad) and just other little things that are annoying.

Tumblr does make it easier to just jump in and start posting things, but sometimes I think that's a bad thing, too. And I also agree that the average age on Tumblr is really young. Nothing wrong with teenagers per se, just...I was a teenager like 8 years ago and I never realized how much I've changed since then. And, my main beef with Tumblr fans, at least in my fandoms, isn't their actual age...it's how young they seem. A lot of them seem to openly admit not watching the episodes of a show before declaring "OTP FOREVER AND EVER!" and it's just - annoying.

So, basically, I hear you, OP.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-24 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
I've seen a lot of "old dog" fandom types do this, along with places like fanficrants where every screw up you make is emblazoned across your chest forever.

Being a teenager is okay. You don't have to like them, but you don't have to be a dick about it. Lurking can be a good thing, but learning along the way isn't a bad thing either.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-24 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
I hate the 'Tumblr is full of teenagers!!!' mentality. Yes it does have teenage users, but there are a hell of a lot of users who are not. It just depends where you are and what you do with your tumblr. You can't judge someone's age depending on what and how they post.

I find it to be just the opposite. I don't have an account at either that I post on regularly, though I do have an LJ sock.

I find that there are many more instances when there's something I want to do on LJ that requires me to use an account then there are on tumblr. There, lurking and anon asks are sufficient for all I desire to do.

While I prefer LJ (especially when it comes to actual interaction with fans) I have to say the way you just wrote off tumblr as "it's for teenagers and good they can stay away from my mature LJ" was really off putting. I spend a lot of time over there because it's easy and I don't have to interact with anyone if I don't want too and can instead flail away in the tags of my posts because it's fucking tumblr and I don't have to be smart and articulate like I sometimes feel I need to be on LJ.

So yeah. I appreciate tumblr sometimes because it's only tumblr.

Though. I will agree with you that sometimes it is best to lurk before jumping right in and making a hugh fandom faux pas as tends to happen much more often on tumblr.

I used to be a bit like you. Until yesterday. I went to look at what has been tagged with my country's name. I found: a small dose of Hetalia, a roughly same dose of politics, amazing-amazing-amazing pictures, clever jokes about the language, and finally a link to an amazingly-written Gen "Guildenstern and Rosencrantz are Dead" fanfic in style of the play on my language. So I reconsidered.

I'm not a visual type, I usually don't really *get* pictures, I need my words to properly experience the world around me. And still, the sheer amount and quality of (contemporary, and not fan-) ART reblogged on the tumblr main page day-to-day, makes me want to go to a museum, or loan an album from a library, or something like that.

I think you're right about tumblr encouraging to dive right in headfirst, and LJ demanding more lurking. And still, regarding annoying tweens, LiveJournal wasn't that much better. (I was on LJ, I'm the living example of that.)

Have you considered maybe stepping out from the fandom-bubble you usually look for on tumblr to see what *else* can you find?

(Anonymous) 2013-04-24 08:49 am (UTC)(link)
From one adult to another, please get over yourself. Think of what you just said and how you chose to convey it. I very definitely know teenagers (including teenagers on tumblr) who could have handled it better.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-24 08:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I usually only look at my dash and that content on there is really up to whoyou friend. My advice? Do a friending meme on Lj/ask your lj friends for their account names and follow them on tumblr. Giving thhat you usually like these people/have similar interests this will probably be a good way to start the experience.
