Some spoilers for Bleach and FMA: B if anyone wants to avoid them:



Grimmjow and Envy (that is the Brotherhood anime version right?) aren't all that surprising to feel empathy for. Grimmjow fought hard to become the best, to be the king others expected of him. He had a whole character arc of going from bloodthirsty Espada to sympathetic anti-hero, and it looks like he may be returning to fight on Ichigo's side soon. Envy was lonely and wanted the sincere love he never received.

They're both violent and villains for the most part, but they do have their relateable traits - it's what makes them good characters.

It's not just that I find them relatable, it's that I find them to be MORE relatable than ALL THE OTHER CHARACTERS. As in, I feel for Envy waaaaay more than I feel for Ed, Al, etc. D:

Well, Ed and Al have an almost hyper-emotionality to them. They can be a little too intense about everything - morals, brotherhood, family, alchemy.

Maybe Envy is more relateable to you for keeping a lot of things back for the most part, and, warped as they are, his other traits are understandable. He has issues with his father and a grudge against a guy he feels betrayed him - there's probably more, but it's been awhile for me.

Envy is a megadouche for most of the anime, but the way his death was written is very, very well done. I think it's hard not to empathize at least a bit with that longing for love and acceptance and that feeling of loneliness, even if the way he went about trying to get it (however unconsciously) was totally misguided.

God, Envy's death may be my favourite part of the whole thing for exactly that reason. The sudden, complete understanding of and sympathy, if not outright empathy, for such an awful creature, coupled with its own mortification at what it is? Perfect.

Relatable or not, these are all my favorite characters from their respective series :D Good taste on you, and look out for murderous urges and you'll be fine.
