I worked several years as a janitor, and I just... I got nothin'.

But hey, at least you're like the majority of people; seeing janitors as the most pathetic and lowly of professions! Congrats, I guess.

Don't worry girl/boy, we are not all assholes. I was on a first name basis with all the janitors at my high school.

That's awesome to hear! I know there are some nice exceptions, like yourself, but sadly the vast majority seem to view janitors as slaves. I mean, if I had a buck for everyone person who -- often while smirking -- threw their cigarette butts right in front of me as I was sweeping up the walkway...

yup. i was a janitor and kinda loved that job (slight social anxiety and a job where people got out of my way and I don't have to interact much? win/win), the idea that it makes people "lower" is ridiculous. especially in a bad economy you take what you can get. some of those jobs pay pretty well!

[identity profile] galerian-ash.livejournal.com 2013-04-24 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Mine didn't pay particularly well, but for me it was still a lot of money (compared to unemployment, heh). And yeah, some aspects of it I genuinely loved!

(Anonymous) 2013-04-24 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
ha, well I say "pay well"... I got enough money to pay my bills and have some left over. that was pretty good for me being really young with very little experience and just getting out on my own for the first time.

I loved my job as a janitor! Although I don't remember much of it. I'll be the first to admit that the cleaning chemicals that I had to use put me in a pleasant haze, which made the intolerable actually tolerable - like the insufferable assholes who urinated in the garbage, planted their hands on the glass after I just cleaned it, and once drove THROUGH THE FLIPPING WALL when I was standing on the other side with a mop.

(Actually that last happened the first day I was working. Which probably goes far in why the rest of my career was spent mixing chemicals in what was probably a questionable manner.)

The nicest people I have ever met were janitors.

[identity profile] galerian-ash.livejournal.com 2013-04-24 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Aw, that put a big smile on my face ♥

(Anonymous) 2013-04-25 04:23 am (UTC)(link)
Seconding this. The janitors I've met have by and large been awesome, sweet people.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-24 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Guess it's just me, but I'm not seeing the janitor hatred here. I suspect what the OP's referring to is the fact that one of the two low-income POC characters in the main cast gets sidelined to a smaller role. Meanwhile, they add two more rather bland, white characters to the regular cast. Interesting, no?

There are a lot of reasons why season 3 doesn't measure up, but that's definitely one of them. I give all of season 3 major side eye.

JANITORS ARE THE BEST EVER

[personal profile] tyger66 2013-04-25 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
One of the janitors at my college is awesome! Her name is Odelle and she's like my second mom. Seeing her is probably the best part of my day, and I can count on her to knock some sense into me if she sees me doing something stupid like skipping class.

All the other Janitor-Ladies know me now because of her, too. Sometimes we all hang out and smoke together when I'm not in class and they have a break.

No matter the school I went to, the janitor was always one of the most popular people. I grew up with the notion that janitors are all cool and I have never been proven otherwise.

I'm currently living in a house that has the first female janitor I have ever encountered in my life and she's not only cool but also a very interesting person. Had a good chat and coffee with her the other day. Them janitors, man!

(Anonymous) 2013-04-25 07:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, yeah. The janitor is the person who knows where everything is. The janitor and the secretary/receptionist are possibly the most essential people to anything that isn't directly relating to a class. And a fair bit that is, as well, if you've ever needed extra equipment for art class or anything photocopied any time soon.
