I worked several years as a janitor, and I just... I got nothin'.

But hey, at least you're like the majority of people; seeing janitors as the most pathetic and lowly of professions! Congrats, I guess.

Don't worry girl/boy, we are not all assholes. I was on a first name basis with all the janitors at my high school.

That's awesome to hear! I know there are some nice exceptions, like yourself, but sadly the vast majority seem to view janitors as slaves. I mean, if I had a buck for everyone person who -- often while smirking -- threw their cigarette butts right in front of me as I was sweeping up the walkway...

yup. i was a janitor and kinda loved that job (slight social anxiety and a job where people got out of my way and I don't have to interact much? win/win), the idea that it makes people "lower" is ridiculous. especially in a bad economy you take what you can get. some of those jobs pay pretty well!

The nicest people I have ever met were janitors.

Guess it's just me, but I'm not seeing the janitor hatred here. I suspect what the OP's referring to is the fact that one of the two low-income POC characters in the main cast gets sidelined to a smaller role. Meanwhile, they add two more rather bland, white characters to the regular cast. Interesting, no?

There are a lot of reasons why season 3 doesn't measure up, but that's definitely one of them. I give all of season 3 major side eye.

JANITORS ARE THE BEST EVER

[personal profile] tyger66 2013-04-25 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
One of the janitors at my college is awesome! Her name is Odelle and she's like my second mom. Seeing her is probably the best part of my day, and I can count on her to knock some sense into me if she sees me doing something stupid like skipping class.

All the other Janitor-Ladies know me now because of her, too. Sometimes we all hang out and smoke together when I'm not in class and they have a break.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-25 02:49 pm (UTC)(link)
No matter the school I went to, the janitor was always one of the most popular people. I grew up with the notion that janitors are all cool and I have never been proven otherwise.

I'm currently living in a house that has the first female janitor I have ever encountered in my life and she's not only cool but also a very interesting person. Had a good chat and coffee with her the other day. Them janitors, man!

Janitors are looked down upon? Huh, it is an important job and someone has to do it...

Directly translated from Norwegian Janitor would be GuardMaster...

From now on, I'm calling all my janitor frieds GuardMasters.

He did have other jobs before that one and to be fair, he was an ex-con and jobs for them aren't gonna be glamorous.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-24 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I have nothing against janitors personally but:

private eye for Vinnie Van Lowe > janitor at Hearst college.

Hands down.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-25 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
But what are the benefits?

(Anonymous) 2013-04-24 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Since when is being a janitor a less than job? Does that mean you feel the same about house cleaners and gardeners? Or others? And it's a race thing? I'm sure my very white (German/Norwegian) mother feels your condescension for every window she cleaned and puked in toilet she scrubbed to make sure her kids had a roof over their heads. My mother is my hero for all of the jobs she had to give us a chance at more. It's a good, honest job. I'd much rather Weevil be in an honest job like that than sleezing around with Vinnie. At least as a janitor, Weevil had a chance at something besides crime and his bike gang.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-24 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
nayrt

I'm cool with janitors. It's backbreaking, thankless work and they deserve a much higher pay and respect than they get. But are we seriously going to pretend that it's somehow cooler than being a private eye? No disrespect, but... really? Given the choice between scrubbing the puke out of toilets for ungrateful spoiled college kids and going on stakeouts and solving mysteries, how many people here would have a tough time deciding what to pick?

I don't know, I don't see him being the best PI. He's not very subtle. But then, neither is Vinnie.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-24 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
At the time his reduced screen time was explained as being a "real world" problem. Apparently the actor had broken his leg and had to take steroids, which led to him gaining a bunch of weight and getting really bad acne - if you look at his scenes carefully it's pretty noticeable. I imagine they decided making him a janitor would let them keep him on the show with less presence.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-25 06:12 am (UTC)(link)
Interesting! I always like hearing about the 'real world problems' that can work their way into the TV shows - sometimes it helps make sense of what seemed like a really bad call from a show-running perspective, and then you think "ah, okay, it's out of their control, so that makes sense after all."

(Anonymous) 2013-04-24 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Just because he took a janitor's job at that point in his life doesn't mean he's going to keep it forever. He's doing a job that people need done, and there's no shame in it, plus from a storytelling perspective, someone needed to find Hank Landry's clothes.

At some colleges, once you've worked there for a while, in any capacity, you're entitled to some free classes, so it's a pretty good move for Weevil to make. The school even had a criminal law department, which might be a good career path for him, seeing as he showed some potential during his brief stint with Mars Investigations.

He could have, of course, been a janitor and a PI. I mean, think about it. He has an excuse to go through people's garbage and such, and generally be below suspicion and unnoticed by the wealthier characters.

I'm pissed that he got sidelined, period, and that's actually where I think the storyline was racist. He was one of my favourite characters.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-25 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
Weevil was one of my faves, too. It did kinda suck that most of the others got active roles and he didn't.

[personal profile] shinyhappypanic 2013-04-25 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
1. I feel like you don't really watch this show
2. it was already established that Weevil gets too emotionally invested in cases to be a PI.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-25 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
And Keith and Veronica don't? The way I recall the show, Weevil landed into trouble because he impulsively beat a guy for hurting a kid. That in itself is not great because hello, vigilante justice. But the kicker was that it ruined the custody case and ultimately, the kid would've been better off if Weevil hadn't interfered.

That doesn't mean he's unsuited to the job, it means he's inexperienced. It's also very much like the impulsive things Veronica does in practically every episode that gets her into hot water too, it just backfired worse for Weevil.

[personal profile] darkdreamer 2013-04-25 04:20 am (UTC)(link)
I disagree with this secret. Weevil's history would have made it difficult for him to get a job, period (and in this day and age, actually getting a job at a SCHOOL with a violent criminal record would likely (hopefully) be impossible, but that's beside the point :P )

And I kind of see it like, going right along with the major themes of the show, of class and racial prejudice, etc... Weevil had potential, was very smart, but still had difficulty after high school because he didn't have the privilege that a lot of his classmates had.

There's this ongoing thread through the show where the wealthy, white kids get all the breaks, and life is totally unfair to those outside that group. Like what happened at his graduation. That broke my heart and made me bawl my eyes out. :(
