The whole idea of must-mimic-the-style-of-the-original-author idea that a lot of people seem to have no longer applies,

Says who? To me, the *whole point* of writing ACD verse Holmes is to use the style, speech and historical context as authentically as possible whilst being as creative as possible with plot, characterisation and emotion. Otherwise, why bother? One might as well write modern verse.

I'm a bit confused, sorry... I was saying that a lot of people feel intimidated by trying to mimic the style of the original -- just like how you described it. Hence they prefer to write fics set in the modern version, yes?
