Yeah, stuff like that can be pretty depressing. I always try telling myself that it's because the newer versions are less intimidating to write fanfic for. The whole idea of must-mimic-the-style-of-the-original-author idea that a lot of people seem to have no longer applies, and if the fic ends up being crappy it'll feel less like sacrilege (in the cases where you have a very high opinion of the original, I mean).

Says who? To me, the *whole point* of writing ACD verse Holmes is to use the style, speech and historical context as authentically as possible whilst being as creative as possible with plot, characterisation and emotion. Otherwise, why bother? One might as well write modern verse.

I'm a bit confused, sorry... I was saying that a lot of people feel intimidated by trying to mimic the style of the original -- just like how you described it. Hence they prefer to write fics set in the modern version, yes?

See below, my mistake.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-24 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
SA Yeah, ok, I see that I read your comment wrong - you mean it 'no longer applies' to modern verse, although again surely the idea of fanfic is that it ought to read like it's part of someone else's created world?

[identity profile] galerian-ash.livejournal.com 2013-04-25 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
But I never tried to define the purpose of fanfic -- I was merely giving a possible reason why the modern versions has more fics than the original.

AYRT I wasn't claiming you did, just that it seemed odd *to me* that people didn't apparently think making their derivative work sound suitably close to the source was important.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-25 11:41 am (UTC)(link)
Holy shit, dude. They do think it's important, which is why they avoid trying to do it. They think they'll get it wrong, so they go off and do something that they're less likely to get wrong, instead.

Someone can't read the word "apparently".

(Anonymous) 2013-04-25 04:11 am (UTC)(link)
Sounds like it belongs there, sure. But the pressure isn't on to make the tone/style/wording match the books. Because that's the other thing about those fandoms--the "neglected" ones are books with a very distinct writing style.

OTOH so, it might be argued, do Moffatt, Gatiss et al
