SA Yeah, ok, I see that I read your comment wrong - you mean it 'no longer applies' to modern verse, although again surely the idea of fanfic is that it ought to read like it's part of someone else's created world?

But I never tried to define the purpose of fanfic -- I was merely giving a possible reason why the modern versions has more fics than the original.

AYRT I wasn't claiming you did, just that it seemed odd *to me* that people didn't apparently think making their derivative work sound suitably close to the source was important.

Holy shit, dude. They do think it's important, which is why they avoid trying to do it. They think they'll get it wrong, so they go off and do something that they're less likely to get wrong, instead.

Sounds like it belongs there, sure. But the pressure isn't on to make the tone/style/wording match the books. Because that's the other thing about those fandoms--the "neglected" ones are books with a very distinct writing style.
