Gifts

(Anonymous) 2013-04-24 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
My birthday's coming up, and my friends and family are starting to ask me what I want. Problem is, I don't like accumulating stuff. I'm very picky about the non-consumable items I bring into my home. But apparently, grocery store gift cards and charity donations aren't "real" gifts, and I need to pick tangible items just to satisfy their collective urge to have things to wrap.

Is there any kind of expensive or foreign food you've always wanted to try/afford? Do you like tea, chocolates, or wines? I have a relative who always bought me the ugliest, tackiest crap until I laid on some pretty heavy hints that I really wished I had the money to buy expensive cheeses. Now for every event she wants to gift me for I get a really awesome selection of cheeses and meats.

Because edible gifts have a built in excuse for why you got rid of them. In fact your friends would be upset if you kept them long-term! :D

Gourmet foods. If they won't get you grocery gift cards, now is the chance to stock up on those rare and expensive food items you've always wanted to try but couldn't afford or couldn't bring yourself to spend that much money on.

Ugh, I hate that. I'm the same way and I tend to ask for charity donations when I can (or gift cards/money if I'm especially poor at a given holiday). Luckily, most of my family members are pretty good about not going out and buying things that people don't want or need just to have something physical to wrap. My stepmom is the exception to the rule, though, and has a habit of buying me and my brother and sister things just so there's an even number of presents and ends up getting a lot of stuff we really can't use. I appreciate the thought and trying to be fair on the one hand, but on the other, if I ask for gift cards or donations it's because that's what I actually want, and insisting on buying physical objects just because is a bit thoughtless.

Ask them for tupperware or kitchen things. :)

Pay attention to what things you reach for but don't have through out the day or things you're noticing are worn out and need replacing, and ask for those things. Need a new dvd/blueray tower or a bookshelf? A pot/pan for cooking? A better door or bathmat? Towels, shoes, organizing totes, stationary?

Do you have a particular hobby? Maybe something for that - like new needles to knit with, new notebooks for writing, blank cards to make kanji flashcards, a new ball for a sport of your choice, a new book of music to play with your instrument.

What about something for outside? Wind-chimes or flowers to hang/plant to beautify your yard/window; new lawnchairs for your next sunbathing/barbeque/party; a horde of rubber duckys for when you inflate the kiddie pool.

Or in the same vein, things for the birds.

This is why I started keeping a list year round, and an Amazon wishlist. Though most of my family/friends are OK with gift cards so that works out well for me.

Maybe take a good look around your place and see if there's anything that could do with an update/replacement or anything practical that you're missing.

CDs! you can burn them and give away the physical copy afterwards. provided you don't just steal your music off the internet. ...do people still buy CDs? does this make me sound 100?

ditto on the food. hell, if all I got for my birthday was a cake I'd be pleased as punch. so maybe dinner at a new place? chocolate or candy from around the world? my friend gives me deep dish Chicago pizza through the mail it's awesome.

entertainment gifts like movies tickets or a museum pass.

salon certificate. even if you are not one to do spas haircuts are always needed.

but one can never have too much socks or underwear.
