Favorite Tropes/Plot Devices

(Anonymous) 2013-04-24 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
What is says on the label. What are your favorite tropes and/or plot devices. Have anything you want to rec?

Personally, I'm especially fond of time or dimension travel.

Currently following this person's fics because there are a few for several different fandoms (Harry Potter, Get Backers, Naruto, Katekyo Hitman Reborn!, Bleach, Prince of Tennis, and K) that fit:

I love people meeting alternate universe versions of themselves, or meeting themself through time travel.

I also really like spies and/or undercover cop plots.

Time and dimension travels are awesome. I agree. I would also like to add to the list alternate realities. For me, alternate realities are even better. I absolutely love characters meeting different versions of themselves. It's just so exciting. SO MANY DIFFERENCES. SO MANY CHOICES. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHH~

I also like it when characters speak multiple languages and that's reflected heavily in fic. It's hard to do but if you can have fun with language in your fic and do it well you do not know how much I will love you.

...I actually despise time travel. Not in a mean or bashing way, I promise! It just seems like it gets overused; I think having a "go to the future!" plot every other episode was the downfall of Heroes, personally.

(Referring to fanfiction) This. I tend to avoid fics that contains elements of time-travel. Well, unless they're Doctor Who fics, 'cause to expect otherwise would be ridiculous.

Time travel is best when it's canonical, or if it is being used to facilitate a crossover.

De-aging and genderswap (either through magic, accident, etc or always-a-girl/boy verses). I just love seeing how that changes up the dynamic between characters, as well as what stays the same.

In original stuff?

Unchangeable fates, or knowing martyrs willingly making the sacrifice. Depressing stuff.

In fanfiction?

PRETEND DATING. ALL THE PRETEND DATING.

I love Teammate in Peril stories. Not so much because I like seeing the beloved character in peril but because I love the wringer it puts their friends through. When Reid was kidnapped on Criminal Minds and Stokes was buried alive on CSI a few years ago, it was like TV nirvana for me.

Gen procedurals, in any brainiac field.

Fanfic and even regular fic disappoints me mightily due to this. :-(

In fanfiction, I really like those romantic cliches that never happen in real life, like everyone getting together to match-make two people or fake-dating for a case and accidentally finding out they actually like each other I'm so stupid for fics like that

In original fiction, idrk. I find that as long as a novel is told in a humorous way without taking away from the plot I can usually enjoy it. Even my favourite tropes are often done in a way different than I usually like them.

I love when characters meet their actors. Like Tom Hiddleston and Chris Hemsworth being dropped into the MCU verse. Sadly, this trope is very rare.

I also like when a couple has a baby they don't know about until the other parent dies. Cliche I know.

And I love when couples break up then some catastrophic events make them realized their love for one another.

I adore arranged marriages where the couple slowly falls in love with each other after the wedding as they get to know each other and their relationship deepens.

I don't know if this is a thing, but combining and actors roles. Taking one canon character that does undercover work and having all of their other movie roles actually be ops. Or Neal from White Collar actually is Bryce from Chuck. Just, combining worlds like that.

Mental/learning/emotional disorders (Asperger's, tourettes, OCD, ADHD, PTSD, dyslexia, parkinson's, etc) fascinate me. I also love fics that portray different types of physical disabilities. I'm utterly intrigued by the idea of characters either living or learning to live with different disabilities. Especially when they OWN their disorders/disabilities.

when I'm in the mood for romance, I like reeeeeally cliche unrealistic bullshit like the universe is keeping the lovebirds apart and one has to rescue the other (with some h/c) and arranged marriages and master/slave relationships that work out to be ooey gooey fluff. And soulbonding. Goddamn I love that trash.

I just love it when characters are really down on their luck (ex. homelessness in fic always pique my interest). That's probably horrible of me, but whatever. I especially love it when a love interest/friend comes along to get them back on their feet.

Pretend dating and arranged marriages are always fun. And ooh, age disparity. I love, love, love fics that explore relationships between people who have a large age difference between them.

I'm also a sucker for grey!character who otherwise wouldn't be. Not dark-dark, but definitely leaning towards it. For example, grey!Harry Potter or grey!Clark Kent.

And finally: kid fics. Especially in slash. I have a huge thing for, well, fathers. Nothing delights me more than a fic that focuses on two characters raising a child-- especially when those two characters are hardly the parenting type (or at least one of them isn't).

Characters being fully conscious but immobilized and helpless (preferably through magical or chemical means rather than physical restraints, but I'll take what I can get) while in the hands of an enemy. The other character doesn't even have to actually do anything to them, there just has to be the awareness that they could.

The loyal-unto-death sidekick/squire character. (I was thinking about this while reading the Podrick Payne secret, because Pod breaks my heart.)

The person who understates everything--like the cryptic heroes of Norse sagas (or Norwegian bachelor farmers).

The badass bookworm.

Found family and/or finding close friends. Particularly if the main character who does the finding is a loner. Gets me every time. Tears of joy have been shed!

I like magic or tech systems with consistent rules, and I love it when characters gradually find out more about how the system works and how to use it best/abuse it. Scenarios where the thing is powered by something horrific is nice too.

Psychological trauma handled realistically.

Characters in god mode, such as Bad Wolf!Rose or Godoka.

That moment - happens a lot in anime - where a show started out pretty light and fluffy or silly suddenly gets a lot more serious? Love that.

Something happening that makes the normally stoic character show strong emotions. Especially when it coincides with the previous point.

Powerswap and/or roleswap AUs, where, say, a character who's a villain in canon is a hero in the AU, and vice versa. It's best if the author can keep them in character and yet completely change their alignment/powers.
