I think that one of the reasons, at least with ACD Sherlock and BBC Sherlock, is that writing about the books is more difficult. You need to know a lot of things about that time in order to do it right so unless you are interested in Victorian England, it's easier to write about present day.

Sure. Although for those of us who do like to write canon, the difficulty is part of the fun :-)

This is exactly what I came here to say. With fantasy stuff, I can see why people might be peeved that others prefer the movies to the books, but not everyone is into painstaking historical research, especially for what is probably a fun side hobby. It's awesome when done well, but it's not for everyone.
