Something weird I realized about this character - how would an Asian end up with the name Watson, unless she was married to a guy with the name, or adopted, or something?

You just answered your own question...

We've seen a photo of her dad (and met her mom and brother) -- her mom is Asian, her dad is Caucasian.

My guess is that her parents last name was Watson, and thus she is also a Watson. It's a pretty far out theory, but I stand by it.

I have two boys in my class who look fully Asian; one's last name is Bruce and the other's is Kerwin. It can't be that uncommon.

Agreed tbh! I have yet to watch the series but whenever I see caps I'm always really impressed by her wardrobe.

I love the outfit on the right, but on the left she looks ridiculous.

Yeah, I generally like her wardrobe, but the costume designer keeps putting her in these frilly and/or twirly short skirts that look silly on a grown-ass woman. Lucy Liu looks fan-fucking-tastic for a woman in her 40s, but I'm in my early 30s and think those skirts look too juvenile for me and my peers.

It's also ridiculous that she wears 4+ inch heels to go trudging through the snow in, but whatever.

I love Joan's wardrobe because it's so fundamentally HERS, and yet it totally fits with what I see on the street in NYC, and it doesn't look crazy expensive either. I even like her sometimes ridiculously high heels because I feel like as a surgeon, she was stuck in comfortable shoes all the time and now she gets to have a little more fun and has embraced that.

And OP: me too!! I have never felt so covetous with regard to a character's wardrobe. It's a bit like walking into an Anthropologie store except then I feel kind of weird about how precisely I match up with their target consumer: college-educated, liberal, white early-30s female who only shopped in thrift stores as a teen, but now...

I think they mix-and-match her clothes weirdly. Like, one outfit I remember, her top looked like soccer mom at the park, and her bottom looked like orchestral sex kitten.

My best friend just started watching the show and I get emails every few days about how great her outfits are. I am pretty much eternally in love with the blue thing she wore when in the Sherlock goes to dinner with the fam episode.
