LGBTQ Book Recommendations

(Anonymous) 2013-04-26 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
They must exist. I've gone through a lot of the stuff recommended at the LJ community the_slash_pile, but have been coming across absolute crap lately.

Last thing I read was Urban and Roux's "Cut and Run" series and Lanyon's "Adrien English Mysteries" series.

The only thing I won't read is:

- BDSM (Particularly D/s)
- PWPs
- Army novels
- Novels with tragic endings

Romance is a must. Otherwise, as long as the story is well-told and well-written I'm definitely game.

Fingersmith as in "one of the main characters is forcibly institutionalized" Fingersmith? Uh...

The Nightrunner Series by Lynn Flewelling is fairly decent. The romance doesn't kick in until the second novel, but there's plenty of subtext in the first one, and the slow build-up is worth it.

The first series I'd recommend is the Outremer trilogy by Chaz Brenchley (book one is called Tower of the King's Daughter). There's a really well-written gay love triangle.

Robin Hobb's Rain Wilds Chronicles features a gay romance (book one is Dragon Keeper, though book two is where it gets interesting). But I'm only up to the third book out of four, so while things are hopeful for them so far, I can't guarantee there'll be a happy ending.

The Legends of the Red Sun series, by Mark Charan Newton, isn't the greatest thing I've ever read, but it's decent, and the only fantasy series I've found with a trans protagonist (who actually transitions via magical means, and then ends up in a relationship). Book one is Nights of Villjamur, but the character I'm talking about doesn't show up until book three, The Book of Transformations. The first two also have a gay protagonist, but he's too busy fighting monsters and saving cities to find any romance. Again, there's a fourth book I haven't read yet (waiting for the paperback), so er, his fortunes might improve in that, or there might be a tragic end in store.

Most of the lgbt historical romances I've read have been horrible, but I blame the genre more than the lgbt-ness of them. About the best was The Rogue and the Gentleman by Bonnie Dee & Summer Devon.

I don't know if you've read Brokeback Mountain by Annie Proulx, but it deserves its reputation as a great book. Even if you've seen the film, it's still amazing. Not a happy ending, though.
