Most of the lgbt historical romances I've read have been horrible, but I blame the genre more than the lgbt-ness of them. About the best was The Rogue and the Gentleman by Bonnie Dee & Summer Devon.

I don't know if you've read Brokeback Mountain by Annie Proulx, but it deserves its reputation as a great book. Even if you've seen the film, it's still amazing. Not a happy ending, though.
