Re: Weed legalization
(Anonymous) 2013-04-26 04:32 am (UTC)(link)I do think there are legitimate concerns about legalizing it, particularly because cigarettes don't have dangerous mind-altering effects for drivers, and there's no secondhand smoke from alcohol. You can do both of those in public without affecting anyone else, except for long-term health effects for people often around secondhand smoke.
Pot, though... driving under the influence is kind of a bad thing. If someone else is forced to hang around you while you smoke pot (as people will inevitably blow off the "no smoking in these areas" signs in exactly the places where you might have to wait outside a building) you may end up messing with a total stranger's neurochemical balance when they need to drive. Getting them all the way to high? No, probably not. But let's not pretend a person needs to be high as a kite to have lowered reaction times.
So yea, I guess, but with some really stringent restrictions and actual enforcement of where you're allowed to smoke it. (i.e. NOT IN PUBLIC. EVER.)
