Re: Weed legalization
(Anonymous) 2013-04-25 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)Alcohol and cigarettes have been shown to be far more harmful to your health than marijuana, and the costs for persecuting people in possession of the stuff is ridiculous when you realize that you could just tax the shit out of it instead. There's no logical reason for it to be illegal.

But I mean, whatever, other people like it, sell it in corner stores, I don't care.
Re: Weed legalization
Seriously keeping pot illegal takes up so much money that could be put to better use.
Re: Weed legalization
And the whole thing that, "If you legalize it, everyone will do it!" is stupid. If they legalized pot tomorrow, I can guarantee I would not be smoking it (I don't smoke cigarettes at all or drink that much).

Re: Weed legalization
(Anonymous) 2013-04-26 12:08 am (UTC)(link)The economy is shit, so might as well start taxing people for it. I doubt it'd make things better, 'course, but it can't hurt.
The main argument I see against it is that people will be more inclined to smoke if were legal, but I call bullshit. Cigarettes are legal and yet I've never once wanted to smoke. I rarely drink, either.
Fact of the matter is, people are going to use it anyway. I've been to numerous house parties where more than half the people there were stoned. And they were STILL better company than those who were smashed.
The fact that weed is illegal when alcohol and cigarettes aren't just makes no sense.

Rest of the world: I don't exactly care, but sure it does not hurt anyone.
We don't need the money from tax that badly and people usually get fined for possession of pot and even if they go to jail, the consequences of that is: going to jail, not getting a Visa to go to USA*... Only jobs you can't have in Norway with a record is working with children, the elderly and disabled if you have violent or sex convictions and banks and stuff probably won't hire you if you have fraud convictions, but it isn't like a job is allowed to look at your record, they have to have a reason and they only get access to the part they actually need, not all of it.

Re: Weed legalization
(Anonymous) 2013-04-26 12:28 am (UTC)(link)As some minor background maybe, I'm dutch, so weed already has this weird half-legal status here. Last year some political parties decided that this is terrible. And also that the drug tourism is terrible, oh no. And we need to counter it. So they decided to implement some kinda system where you need to have a pass and no foreigners are allowed into the shops etc.
Now, I live in a city very close to the border so this is definitely a place where lots of people from Belgium and German come to get their weed. Anyway, before the pass system? Things went pretty smoothly, not much nuisance. Since the pass system? Illegal street trade has sky rocketed, streets are unsafer not just from the peddlers, but also from the drug runners racing around in their cars and if that wasn't enough yet the city has also taken a hit in regard to general tourist income. Cause, you know, all those people that come here to smoke some weed also go have a drink and dinner somewhere, maybe buy some stuff, get some parking tickets too maybe, shit it is a gold mine. The pass system has been removed now, I believe, but seriously, I just want politicians to grow some balls and properly legalize it. Not just the selling, but also the growing of it. And tax it. Like... we are in a crazy ass economic crisis. Now it isn't exactly going to solve it, but that income would be a nice bonus.

I do not now and would have no interest in smoking pot if it were legal, but I see no benefit to continuing to overload our penal system with non-violent drug offenders.
