Of course he's not a feminist. Men can't be feminists, they can only be allies.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-26 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Are you being sarcastic or are you one of those idiots who actually believes that?

(Anonymous) 2013-04-26 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I think every thread that mentions both males and feminism is required by law to have someone say that.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-26 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, glad we got that out of the way then.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-27 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
NAYRT

Fuck you.

Feminism is about promoting and protecting women.

Males are either keeping out of our way or they're... he other kind.

Males who try and involve themselves in our cause are generally doing so to derail it.

AYRT

And fuck you right back.

Because I've met plenty of MEN (actively fuck you and your dehumanizing, btw) who are actively promoting equality.

Start a dialogue and don't be a bitch. Then maybe we'll actually GET somewhere and I won't have to listen to jokes about whether my single-at-30 or my being a teacher came first, like the chicken and the egg; won't have to worry if the man ten steps behind me on the dark street is following me or just going home; won't have to constantly wonder if the reason I didn't get the academic director because women are supposed to be the teachers, and men are supposed to be managers. >:(

Pretty sure the last thing this cause needs is a further widening of the gap between genders.

I'd better go tell my Dad that he should have been keeping out of the way rather than encouraging me and my sister to excel, then.

My brother should probably stop being so nice to his girlfriend, it's holding her back

I actually do think men shouldn't up and claim the label for themselves, but I also think it's not a big deal if they do. After all, the vast majority of people haven't really been in a space where they've been able to understand this hairsplitting between 'activist' and 'ally'.

Rather than frothing at the mouth about who can be what, though, I think it's more telling about how a man reacts to someone telling him or asking him to refer to himself as an ally instead.

Reluctant disbelief/initial incredulity? It's to be expected. When I heard the term at first, in the context of lgbtq activism, I thought it was dumbest shit, even though I'm not anything close to cis or straight.

Violent denial and entitlement? Dan Savage level blow outs about how he's so knowledgeable and great? Other petty arguments? Probably gonna side-eye those dudes real goddamn hard.

But overall I don't think pays to be so textbook perfect about some of these things, because I feel like drawing the hard red line everywhere is what makes people forget about the individual, human element, and breaks down important lines of communication.

OH YOU

(Anonymous) 2013-04-26 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
You know, I hope you're one of those anons who hangs around F!S saying outrageous SJW-ish things in an attempt to be funny/make SJWs look bad. (I have convinced myself such anon or anons must exist, because the alternative is too depressing.) Nonetheless:

Feminist: a person who supports feminism.
Feminism: the advocacy of women's rights on the grounds of political, social, and economic equality to men.

Being an ally of feminism is being feminist.

If you want a more exclusive word to trim out everyone who you don't think belongs in the club, make up your own and don't try to redefine one other people are already using.

Males have the RIGHT ro be involved in female positive movments. You dont have the right to exclude us from your little groups. If I say I'm a feminist then none of you cunts have the right to deny it.
