I've heard people say that when he's in interviews he says great feminist things but his writing leaves something to be desired.

However, I personally haven't seen enough of his stuff to judge. All I can remark on is how I've seen other people react to his work. I've seen good come of it so maybe it's more like "one step forward, two steps back" kind of thing?

I don't know. This debate alone, honestly, makes me want to watch his stuff just so I can be better informed even though I have little to no interest in it otherwise.

Anyway, you do know a feminist can by misogynistic right? Because no one's perfect and we all make mistakes.

Yeah, um, "feminist" =/= flawless bastion of unprejudiced pureness. Just because he has issues that stop him from writing gender issues perfectly all the time, doesn't mean he doesn't believe in the idea of feminism and try to help the cause. Since when is it impossible to believe in something unless you're perfect at it?

I thought the point of the rape thing was not that it made Inara "worthy" of respect but that it forced Mal to come to terms with the fact that he'd been treating her badly and that he finally began giving her the respect he owed her all along. I don't like the idea of using rape like that but I don't think it's the way you interpret it exactly.

Is this a repeat? I distinctly recall there being a secret mentioning that character's gang rape issue. And it was a secret about Whedon.

I've never even seen this show/know anything about it so I don't know where else I would have read this.

I know the secret sounds judgemental, but you guys are being waaaaaaaaay defensive of Whedon. For every person who says what's in the secret, there's ten peeps like you guys, who deride them for their ideas of feminism and who should/should not be included under label.

So really, I don't think the counter ideas: Whedon is a feminist vs. Whedon is NOT a feminist are ever going to outweigh each other, go away, or have one over take the other. It's an ongoing battle that will never stop.

(And by God, I really wish it would stop because I give no fucks about this man.)

Inara was going to get gang raped? Really? Where did that come from? The only potential plot I heard about Inara was that she was going to have a terminal disease. Where's the gang rape coming from?

Like many others, I haven't seen enough of his work to be able to comment. From the looks of it, a lot of his progress was more of a "progressive within context" thing more than anything else, and still held within certain constraints of executive meddling. But then, I'm one of those "a small step forward is still a step forward" types.

But perhaps a bit more importantly - can we stop deriding each other for not being enough of a feminist, or the wrong kind of feminist, or simply "not a feminist" because the progression of women's rights in their life means something very different from the progression of women's rights in yours?

So what you're saying is that if someone isn't aware of this obscure bit of trivia (this gang rape thing OP described isn't canon, it never happened, it was just one version of one theory to explain a prop, with another character's emotional reaction to this possible turn of events extrapolated theoretically as well . . . ) from a single short-lived tv show and/or doesn't share your opinion of said trivia exactly, then you'll never respect or trust anything they say in the future. I'm not sure how you even successfully interact with the world if you can't trust statements from 98.7% of the population of Earth.

Hearing about that potential storyline actually made me glad that Firefly was cancelled before it could be ruined with such shittery. I think that Whedon really does have good intentions and he is trying to support the cause of equality, it's just that he kind of sucks at it. He has cool concepts/settings and I love his dialogue and sense of humor, but I get so very uncomfortable with his attempts at being "progressive," because I feel like he fails at it more often than he succeeds. Good intentions can only take you so far. I don't care whether or not he should be called a feminist, though, 'cause I feel like that discussion is just a distraction from the real issues surrounding him and his works. And fuck, it's not like I'm the feminist police who gets to say who can and can't be a feminist.
