I think he's a feminist and I enjoy most of his work but I also think his shows/movies have a lot of issues.

Take Inara, for example. Here we had a sex worker who enjoyed her job, wasn't ashamed of it and wasn't shamed (by most people) for it (Companions seemed to be respected throughout the 'Verse and were considered in high social standing.) But then you had Mal, someone who supposedly cared for Inara, calling her a 'whore' and constantly demeaning her for her chosen profession.

2 steps forward, 1 step back. I think that's how a lot of Whedon's work goes. Progress but not without problems.

Mal isn't praised for his behavior though. Mal's opinions =/= Whedon's opinions.

Seconding this. 2 steps forward, 1 step back is still a net 1 step forward. It's not ideal, but I'll take that over nothing, and I'll gladly take it over net steps back.

Yup. I'm fine with most of his work; the problem is when everyone (fans and the media) treat him like OMG the Archduke of Feminism, thank God a man finally came along to do it right, and if you critique any aspect, you get slammed by defenders. It's better--and more interesting--than a lot of stuff, but people act like he should get a permenent free pass forever more. Which is, among other things, boring.

(Frankly, I think the problems with Inara's characterization, and how it made sense in the worldbuilding, has plenty to pick apart even without the Word of God gang-rape.)
