Wait a fucking minute, since when was it a rule to write in ~realistic discrimination~ for female characters? This explains why I keep trying to find a story, any story, where a female character isn't The First Woman To Ever Do This Manly Man Thing And Everyone Hates On Her Special Specialness (TM). I like unremarkable female power fantasies, goddamn it. Female badasses being so commonplace that nobody makes note of it anymore.

I remember reading Sword and Sorceress and MZB complaining "Can't we get a female-centric plot OTHER than rape&revenge already? To to reject pile with you!"

That explains a lot about why I pretty much lived off that anthology when I was a teenager. I feel like it was drastically overlooked, I need to grab those volumes I missed.

I just finished reading Starcrossed and Liar's Moon by Elizabeth Bunce, which I think would qualify. Cadet of Tildor by Alex Lidell. Resenting the Hero by Moira J. Moore (ignore the horrendous covers). Assassin's Gambit by Amy Raby -- note, this is romance, but there is remarkably little gender inequality (although the heroine is an assassin and uses sex as one of her tools, but it's actually... quite well done in that she struggles with PTSD; it might not be quite what you are looking for but I was actually very impressed because any assassin stories like that that I've read, the heroine just shrugs it off, and it is very much not the case here).

Gail Z. Martin's Summoner chronicles. It is an epic fantasy, but it's not standard. The heroines are pretty awesome, and there are LOTS of powerful side women characters as well. There is some criticism of one of the female character's choice to remain at a safe distance on the battlefield when she was pregnant, but I thought that just common sense.

Amanda Downum, Necromancer series. Not only equitable gender (well, for the most part; there is the king's mistress, but that's actually a VERY well done story as said mistress is trans and falls for the queen as well) but lots of queer characters.

Cinda Williams Chima. Rae Carson. Both have powerful women rulers coming into their own, but I don't think there is anything that isn't, well, common sense for a ruler, period.

The Greyfriar trilogy. Awesome female protag, lots of strong women characters. The first book, the female lead does have to overcome some misogyny, but that is also ageism and men dismissing her. She turns everything on its head. The books by Barb and JC Hendee are also pretty good, I think.

I think that's probably a good list to start with :)

That's a brilliant list to start with, Amanda Downum is an old favorite of mine, but I never heard of the rest, so I appreciate so many female-centric speculative books to add to my reading list. Thanks so much!
