Lord save us from all the SJW in fandom. I need to print up some t-shirts that say "I remember when fandom was fun".

Why would you have to write in all the little discriminations? That's ridiculous. Stop that.

Why do you have to write sexism in? It's rp, not serious literally commentary; the point is to write the characters in situations you want to see. Personally, I find reading and writing fictional women without the 'realistic' sexism of the real world very satisfying, and a lot of people feel the same.

If you just like writing dudes more, that's perfectly fine, but I hate this line of thinking.

[personal profile] intrigueing 2013-04-26 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
And...it's impossible to just fantasize about being a girl not having to deal with it? You have to imagine being a guy in order to imagine not dealing with it? You can't even reconcile the concept of both being a girl and not having the oppression? Like...not even for a handwavy fandom fantasy? I gotta say, that sounds kind of depressing.

I dunno, I'm more focused on why something "unrealistic" is supposed to be impossibly difficult to fantasize about (as opposed to...roleplaying as a fictional character), but if you wanna go all philosophical and deep about it: it's also pretty difficult to enact RL change and strive for a better situation if you can't even visualize it in the first place.

Now that I think about it, I'm sure there's some big technical psychological term for visualizing desired outcomes...

Dude. FUCK realism. You know the saying "be the change you want to see in the world"? You know "lead by example"? DO THAT INSTEAD. I don't feel like depressing myself either, so I write worlds where reality is better. And if I actually put any stock in this "agenda" besides acknowledging its origins and letting it be what it is, I would proudly hold it up to ours as an example, as if to say "see, this is how awesome we COULD be, how it SHOULD be".

Seriously, there are plenty of other writers out there who can happily live off of water and righteous anger alone. You don't have to force yourself to do the same just to prove you care. If it means that much to you, there are a dozen different ways to be part of the solution.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-26 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
heh people here seem to not get why this is a secret, but I totally do. god help you in SJW circles of fandom (and they get EVERYWHERE) if you don't write a realistic feminist disabled trans WOC that fights for social rights every single line of the fic and nothing else gets done

because god forbid you write what you know, or write what's fun, without making it a soapbox. and hard, "problematic" issues can be in fic without the mere presence of it being "omg trigger, hdu" lol

God, how depressing. I never see my female characters as confronting all these terrible misogynistic obstacles. They're girls and they do their shit. It's pretty sweet. I almost always write more female characters than male.

I'm so sick of this attitude that any work of fiction with minority characters has to be about IMPORTANT SOCIAL ISSUES, or it's ~*unrealistic*~. Fuck that. Sometimes we don't want "realism" in our stories. Sometimes we just want to read something fun where people like us kick butt and fight bad guys like all the other heroes, without having to worry about racism or homophobia or whatever.

There's a place for stories that deal with IMPORTANT SOCIAL ISSUES, but it'd be nice to be able to read something that takes you away from that shit when you have to deal with it every fucking day in real life.

I'm tired of all the SJW crap, but... why would you need to write in all of the little discrimination and stuff? If anything, that would make YOU come off as an SJW unless your story was specifically about those things.

Or maybe the damn Zyrtec is fucking with my brain and I'm completely missing something here.

Wait a fucking minute, since when was it a rule to write in ~realistic discrimination~ for female characters? This explains why I keep trying to find a story, any story, where a female character isn't The First Woman To Ever Do This Manly Man Thing And Everyone Hates On Her Special Specialness (TM). I like unremarkable female power fantasies, goddamn it. Female badasses being so commonplace that nobody makes note of it anymore.

I agree with the other comments: you don't really need to do that. Personally, I think that's where a lot of fiction goes wrong, since instead of thinking "wow what would make a strong, interesting character?" they start thinking of the ~hardships~ that stereotypically define minorities.

When I read or play a female character, I do not want to deal with creeps, or rape threats, or domestic abuse. I just want to have a good time, and unless it's historical fiction, misogyny and rape culture don't... really add anything to a story.

However, OP, I can kind of a relate. I don't know what you identify as, but I also know that it's not always that easy to put out of mind when RPing--at least, not at first. Depending on how life's treated you, and how deeply some things have gotten under your skin, I know it can really be hard to unwind and stop feeling the weight of that baggage when RPing, too.

But, if you're writing men even remotely realistically, you'll have to be portraying all the ways patriarchy hurts them, too. Why aren't you tired of that?

I would really like to know how many women feel this stifling oppression on a day to day basis. Because, like, I know that as a woman I am making less than my male counterparts, but that's an institutional oppression that isn't INURFACE all the time. (Well, maybe it is for people who are well below the poverty line and can't afford food and shelter, for them, very little in this comment applies).

Secrets like this make it sound like the OPs are being walked up to every day, punched in the vagina by a man, cussed out and stolen from just because they're women. And I really doubt that's the case for most people. And if it is in your story, it's probably a shitty story.

If you feel the need to write in that much emphasis on oppression and Serious Issues, it's probably going to result in a fucking boring story.
