I would really like to know how many women feel this stifling oppression on a day to day basis. Because, like, I know that as a woman I am making less than my male counterparts, but that's an institutional oppression that isn't INURFACE all the time. (Well, maybe it is for people who are well below the poverty line and can't afford food and shelter, for them, very little in this comment applies).

Secrets like this make it sound like the OPs are being walked up to every day, punched in the vagina by a man, cussed out and stolen from just because they're women. And I really doubt that's the case for most people. And if it is in your story, it's probably a shitty story.

Typical day. I toss on a t-shirt, drive to the hardware store. In the parkinglot there's older men leaning against the hood of their car, drinking soda and staring intently at every woman that walks by.

I go inside. Salesperson walks up "Are you lost?" No, no sir, I am just headed to the screws and nails where I know exactly what I want. Yes. Really. "Picking up some stuff for your husband, huh?" >_<

Guy looks over "Hey, nice shirt" I'm wearing one of my Iron Man ones. Yep, it is a nice shirt. "Thanks" "So have you seen any of the movies that came out recently? Did you know it's a comic series too?" Why no, I just picked out this shirt because my girlbrain liked the pretty colors. HURRDURRR.

I go into the toy store and start to one side, a salesperson will 'helpfully' point out that the girl's toys are on the other.

It's not being punched in the vagina and cussed out, it's just a constant stream of doubtful looks and suggestions and 'corrections' and "they make Legos for girls now, you know" I know, ring up my Hobbit set without commentary.

And it's sort of like a fridge humming in the background because the brain gets good at filtering it out and you sort of forget how very loud it is, until the power goes out.

this is what me and my friends mostly experience, too

i think the most frustrating thing personally is just that men never listen to me lol whether they're stranger or friends, it's like nothing i say can go through without some kind of contention and preaching on their part

i have a college education, i look up things and research shit that i'm interested in, and i am a generally well informed individual

being second guessed, interrupted, and patronized all the time gets really fucking old

especially when if i have a problem with something they're saying or disagree with them, they just brush it off like i'm some little kid who just doesn't ~~know any better~~ or i don't have a sense of humor

i guess i could get these magically awesome new friends who are just magically waiting to be discovered somewhere, but i've met more dudes who do this shit than not, and they don't do the same thing to their friends with dicks

Clearly I'm lucky, I don't recall ever encountering that outside people actively trying to be jackasses.

This is the best explanation of this I've seen so far.

As a woman, I don't. I don't actually make less than men doing the same job I do, and I'm frankly more worried about whether I'm paid enough to make the job worth my while than about what my co-workers are making. I'm aware there's about a 25% chance I'll be raped in my lifetime, but that also means there's about a 75% chance I won't, and I don't lose sleep over it any more than I do other kinds of crime or misfortune I could suffer (and less than some others.) I know a few guys who are obnoxious sexists, but I find them more pathetic and exasperating than offensive, and not particularly threatening.

Without knowing more about OP and her circumstances, there's really no way we can tell whether she feels so oppressed because she's genuinely had nothing but bad experiences with bad men and heavy-handed patriarchal institutions all her life, or if she feels so oppressed because she's been taught that she is and that message is continually reinforced by the people around her. I think both scenarios are possible. Either way, I feel bad it's spoiling her ability to enjoy writing women and I hope she finds a way to overcome that.

My femaleness hasn't had any effect on anything I do since I left the girls-only school at which I was miserable throughout my teens for reasons which had nothing to do with it being full of girls, except for resulting in me being bullied off an SJWanker-overrun board for not thinking I'm oppressed.
