I'm ngl it drives me kinda nuts when fic does this too-- which is why I think the ratings on fics should match the existing content, not potential upcoming content. Sometimes you just want smut and when you're 20 chapters into an "Explicit" fic and they're still smiling shyly at each other and that's as far as the story gets, it can be annoying :P

I'm with you. I also think that people should be more aware of the ratings they give their fic. If I'm combing through fic, looking for one-shot smut, and I find one that is NC-17, or Explicit, but only has kissing in it... just... what the fuck. Kissing does not equal NC-17. Either start the sex-capades or get the fuck off the boat.

Those fics are posted by people who think higher rating fics get more views, and they're usually right.

It's an attention ploy, same as any other. :)

Ugh this just makes me think of this porn fest going on right now, where one of the artists only draws kissing, and only from the neck up. It's a PORN fest for fucks sake.

I know I personally parse NC-17 as sexytimes, but don't some people use NC-17 for extreme violence?

Honestly, fic ratings are a pain in the ass. I never know when my violence level has gone over PG, when it merits an R (or is it M for mature these days?).

However, although I don't post explicit sex, I agree that I'd expect an NC-17 fic to contain it.

Yeah, I like when someone puts something like, "PG for this chapter, NC-17 in later chapters" So you know sex is coming (heh), but that they're won't be any in this chapter.

same, I think that's the best option. That way you keep interested parties on the line but people who came in looking for smut can wait until you've arrived at that destination.
