I'm ngl it drives me kinda nuts when fic does this too-- which is why I think the ratings on fics should match the existing content, not potential upcoming content. Sometimes you just want smut and when you're 20 chapters into an "Explicit" fic and they're still smiling shyly at each other and that's as far as the story gets, it can be annoying :P

(Anonymous) 2013-04-27 08:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm with you. I also think that people should be more aware of the ratings they give their fic. If I'm combing through fic, looking for one-shot smut, and I find one that is NC-17, or Explicit, but only has kissing in it... just... what the fuck. Kissing does not equal NC-17. Either start the sex-capades or get the fuck off the boat.

Yeah, I like when someone puts something like, "PG for this chapter, NC-17 in later chapters" So you know sex is coming (heh), but that they're won't be any in this chapter.

Read some smutty one-shots instead?!

Go read a PWP. Pretend it's from the characters in the fic you're reading. Then go back and finish your fic. That's the best advice I can give.

Also, why would it be gen if they didn't have sex? The story is still fully focused on the romance right?

This. So much this. I was like "Jesus, does PWP not exist any more?"

you know, this actually sounds like my kind of fic. fandom? link?

(Anonymous) 2013-04-27 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
But even if they never have sex, it's still not going to be gen. If the characters are involved (and it sounds like they are, since they keep trying to have sex and then being interrupted) then the fic you're reading isn't gen.

I hate to admit it, but I sort of love teasing and drawing it out.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-27 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Lack of follow-thru aside, I have a really hard time believing a 200,000 word fic is any good if they've had as many "gonna have sex except OH WAIT EMERGENCY NEVERMIND" happenings as you claim. Those sorts of things are good once, or very rarely twice, a story.

Any more than that, and I'm sorry, it's not a well-crafted story. :/

You don't say the rating of the fic anywhere in this secret? If it's supposed to be explicit and isn't, I agree, but if it's PG-13 or something, let it go. Not your story.

Kudos to the author who can write a 200K word fuck-fest. I can't imagine doing that without, you know, plot.

I can think of a Clint/Coulson fic that left me feeling a bit like this. And I tend to just skim the smutty bits most of the time anyway. But it was like, "Wait, all this build-up, you label it as a pairing fic, so perfectly written, and...and...AW C'MON, LET 'EM KISS!"

I don't think 'gen' means what you think it means, OP.

Hint: it doesn't mean 'not porn'.

This is why I skim the smut in non-smut/PWP stories

[personal profile] nyxelestia 2013-04-27 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm sorry, but when I read porn, I want porn. With a few exceptions, the vast majority of sex-scenes in non-smut fics bore me and have no relation to the plot. If the sex scene is deeply tied with the plot I'll read it, but otherwise most of them are just there to "supplement" or accessorize the plot. So I skip past them and go straight back into the plot, and I go find PWP/smutfic when I want porn.

Hell, when I wrote a 15k smutfic, I spent ages fretting because of the background plot that snuck in when I wasn't looking.

Honestly, OP, don't look for smut or porn in fic that isn't PWP. Just stick to smut in PWP, and read sex scenes in fic as part of a story, not as porn, and you'll instead find fanfic to have the occasional pleasant surprise rather than full of disappointment.

Ahh, I knew a fic that was like this in my fandom that was never finished, and thankfully got removed from the internet. The author was dragging out the eventual sexytimes between the characters for so long that eventually when they did do it, it pretty much ruined the characterization that was set up in the story. It was kind of great.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-28 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
... My only thought is, after 200k of build-up, that better be a damn good sex scene. I mean, there are ways to marry long plot and smut in a relationship fic, but if you tease people for two hundred thousand words, you'd better be sure the pay-off is pretty damn spectacular.

If you were horribly, horribly cruel, you could tease for 200k, get them in the scene together, build up some atmosphere, let the audience hope that this time, this time we can go all the way, and then ... fade to black, "The End".

I would advise wearing fireproof clothing while attempting this, though.

What's worse is when there's a ton of build-up towards the inevitable sex scene and the payoff is...less than impressive. Like the otherwise fairly well-written but slightly plodding and drawn-out ST: Voy AU, Campus. About 100,000 words before alt!J/7 even started necking, and when they finally did fuck it was decidedly lackluster. Luckily, the plot and character development had me pretty invested by then, so that wasn't the dealbreaker.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-28 04:13 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, I hate that! Nothing is worse than an NC-17/Explicit rating and tons of UST, build-up, and foreplay, only to fade to black or jump ahead with a mention that they had sex, usually because the author is "not good at writing sex". A story with UST should always have on-page RST, even if it's at the very end. If you can't do that, just stick to kissing. Don't write about him getting hard, her getting wet, them wanting to rip each other's clothes off, then punk out on the actual sex.

Gen doesn't mean what you think it means. Gen means there's plot and any romance/no romance is just a background unimportant thing.

I'm the opposite. I don't get why long plotty fics must include the obligatory ending sex scene. Or the one in the middle that just slows down the action.

If you want to read porn, go read some pwps.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-28 07:22 pm (UTC)(link)
That can be annoying. However fic isn't actually gen if it focuses on romantic relationships, even if there is no sex, so labeling it as such would be wrong as well. They should just label it as non-explicit.
