the problem with gen is that it has different definitions in different part of the fandom, which essentially makes it meaningless.

For some people gen = no romance, no pairings whatsoever.

For some people gen = this fic can pass as an episode of the show in terms of romance, without having romance being the focus of the fic. So like, a firefly fic that is all about some heist with some mentions of zoe/wash happening would still be gen cause it is no more than what someone could expect watching a random ep of the show.

And then for some people gen = romance is not the focus of this fic, but pairings (both canon and non-canon) can still get mentioned.
