Hmmm, maybe. You might be right there actually. I shouldn't have jumped to this conclusion - but just the other day I found a time travel fic with 'Gen' clearly in the summary, got all excited, then opened it up to find a list of pairings right at the top. o.O So there are definitely people out there who don't understand the meaning of 'Gen', and I guess that was in my mind.

But reading the secret again, the ranty tone does mean it's more likely to be hyperbolic, yeah.

But Gen doesn't mean pairingless. It just means it's about the plot and no random sex scenes, people making out or anything like that should occur.

No, gen means fic that does not focus on romance. It can have pairings, yes, but if the plot of the fic focuses on the romance between that pairing even without any sex scenes, then it isn't gen.

the problem with gen is that it has different definitions in different part of the fandom, which essentially makes it meaningless.

For some people gen = no romance, no pairings whatsoever.

For some people gen = this fic can pass as an episode of the show in terms of romance, without having romance being the focus of the fic. So like, a firefly fic that is all about some heist with some mentions of zoe/wash happening would still be gen cause it is no more than what someone could expect watching a random ep of the show.

And then for some people gen = romance is not the focus of this fic, but pairings (both canon and non-canon) can still get mentioned.
