THE OTHER MAN.

The instance an author uses this word combination, I stop considering leaving kudos on their story. I only ever make exceptions for works in which the reader/the narrator isn't supposed to know the character's name.

idk if you type a characters name for the 11,000th time, phrases like "the other man" and "the taller man" or whatever start looking pretty good.

If you need to type a character's name for the 11,000th time only because you can't use "the other man", you're probably a bad writer. You can always use pronouns instead, and there certainly must be something in-between (unless you're writing a dialogue fic or something very terse, in which case you usually don't need to indicate what character you're talking about).

eh, maybe I'm a bad writer then, but using pronouns doesn't always work when you have only one gender taking part in a scene.

Didn't mean to offend you, it's just that I personally wouldn't read your fic? It's not like this phrase is an ultimate literary criterion of doom; yet, if one wants to avoid using it, it is perfectly accomplishable, no matter the genders. The fact that you use it means that you don't want to avoid it, which is fine - it doesn't require justification.

There, they didn't even say that they couldn't do without using the phrase. All the "IMO, bad writer=an insult" implications aside, the meaning of our exchange was different.

I didn't used to mind "the other man" (it's better than "the blond(e) man" or "the raven", etc), but then someone I follow said it always make her think some random OTHER guy had come into the sex scene and that made me start picturing that and now I can't help it and just laugh each time

In my trollier moments I want to write a fic where that's the case: Character A and Character B are getting it on, I mention "The other man" and it turns out Character C just slipped in there).
