fic pet peeves
(Anonymous) 2013-04-27 08:38 pm (UTC)(link)Personally, I'm tired of the "same" fics in every fandom I come across, such as:
- a character goes into heat / Omegaverse (I'll still take it if the UST/smut is good, but still...)
- take an existing male character, make them FTM & sub (this happens more than you would think)
- if same-sex couple in question, change one character's gender
- 5 times blah blah blah and 1 time blah blah blah
- character gets raped and now their romantic interest has to use their gentle healing sex powers
- character gets preggers, angst ensues (BONUS: abortion is never an option in these fics, ugh)
Re: fic pet peeves
Just.
THE OTHER MAN.
The instance an author uses this word combination, I stop considering leaving kudos on their story. I only ever make exceptions for works in which the reader/the narrator isn't supposed to know the character's name.

Re: fic pet peeves
Blatant OOCness without explanation.
Unrealistic depictions of injuries or illnesses.
High School AU's.
AU's where the characters are a different species ie Transformers or MLP fics having them all as humans. Usually ties in with the above pet peeve.

- Very bad grammar. It's okay of there are a few typo's, but if it looks like it's written by a grade schooler...no thanks.
- blatant self-inserts (especially if it's also first person).
- in slash, if being bottom is characterized as being degrading (unless it's specifically kinky fic).
- Mpreg and pregnancy fic in general.
- Redundant side characters in what's basically smut fic, especially if it's a character trying to "get in the way" of sex/relationship.
- Fucked up characters instantly become nice or happy because of luuuuv.
- Drawn-out scenes about jealousy

Re: fic pet peeves
(Anonymous) 2013-04-27 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)-Feminizing male characters who otherwise aren't feminine.
-Excessive epithets
-"a single tear/tears slipped down his/her face" -- for some reason this always irritates me. I can accept watery eyes, I can accept "tears spilling over", but I just cannot stand when authors describe crying that way.
-I have issues with the word "shocked". Especially when authors use it often.
-Walls of text, OMFG.
-OOCness without just cause.
-Omegaverse.
-Cheesy BAMF characters.
-Characters who constantly smirk.
-Poorly done bashing.
-Unrealistic sex. (Because sticking something that large in someone's bum without lube or preparation IS NOT GOING TO FEEL AWESOME UNLESS THE PERSON GETS OFF ON AGONY, OKAY?)
-Sex in every chapter. Yes, the characters love sex and have it often, we get it.
-Giggling. It's weird when grown women do it, and it's even worse when it's a guy. I don't care if that's sexist or whatever. Grown men should not giggle. It's just not cute.
-Shrieking and screeching is SO annoying. I once read this very decent Spirited Away fic that was almost completely ruined because the protagonist kept shrieking. Ugh.
There are tons of others, but I'd rather not spend all night adding to this list.

Bad grammar makes me hit the back button like a cat jumping over a surface covered in foil. Same with OOCness. Love triangles when the previous SO of one of the characters is derailed to facilitate the other two getting together (worse if it's a female character).
And I know this makes me an awful, awful person. But... ok, no, this depends on the character too, but most of trans* fic, I really don't like reading them. Too anvilicious/heavy-handed most of the time, or just plain OOC. I can see them working with characters like Naoto from Persona 4 being FTM. Or heck, I've seen good HS fic with FTM!Dave. But there was a really good fic from another fandom that made my favorite character FTM and I just couldn't see it. I kept on reading, because it was otherwise a good fic, but then there was a smut scene and it was suddenly painfully OOC. *GOES TO HIDE UNDER A ROCK*

Re: fic pet peeves
I know it's petty, and being part of a fandom for a rarepair means I'm left with very few options, but I'd rather suffer and live on my own fics than read something that looks like a nine-year-old wrote it up.
Edit: Oh yes, and there's one peeve I have that happens even before I read the fic: If your fic is 1k words long and you have like, twenty taga advertising it, I assume your fic just isn't good enough to rely on itself for advertising or something. It's like, an early sign of bad writing.

Unmarked consent issues, especially when the author doesn't seem to realize there are issues.
Characters being obviously OOC, especially when it's for the sake of having them act lovey-dovey.

Re: fic pet peeves
(Anonymous) 2013-04-28 12:21 am (UTC)(link)I go into it expecting ptsd, amnesia, temporary extreme paranoia, schizophrenia, dis-associative disorder or something with the character learning to overcome or cope with it - not unfounded, the summaries usually imply something along those lines.
But then a couple paragraphs in I get a flailing 2yr old in an adults body with the implication they're going to fall in love and have sex with their primary caretaker. >:( And the masturbation....what is WITH the inappropriate masturbation in these fics?
I can't believe I've stumbled across these things a couple times in several fandoms. Wth.

- And in slash, 'the smaller man/male' and 'the taller man/male' because it always makes me think of seme/uke stereotypes, which I also hate.
- again, seme/uke stereotypes. Especially when people insist you order character names in a certain way depending on who 'tops'.
- the words 'male' and 'female', 'male' mostly though. It just makes me cringe.
- constant descriptions of hair and eye colour. I GET IT ALREADY. HE HAS GREEN EYES.
- romanticised rape, rape jokes and words like 'retard'
- a lot of SPaG errors. I can take some, but sometimes it just gets ridiculous.
- MPREG
- Omegaverse
- the word 'chuckled' - another cringey one. I blame the Chuckle Brothers. I always hated them.
- when someone is annoyed at someone else and they use their full name and this somehow conveys their annoyance. This isn't a big peeve, but it just strikes me as so cliché.
- authors notes interrupting the story
- "I'm not homophobic, but NO YAOI/YURI NO NO NO. I like het. And again, because nothing I just wrote would have conveyed this to you, no yaoi/yuri." / "I'm not homophobic, but I don't like slash for canons that don't have slash in them. This character has never had a relationship in canon, their sexuality has never even been discussed, why are some people putting them with someone of the same gender?"
- in Naruto, when they learn Elemental Manipulation at a really young age. No, it's made VERY CLEAR in the series that this is a Chuunin-level skill and that there are plenty of other things they could be learning before that. Sometimes an AU will twist it enough that I'll believe it, but I've seen fics that are like, "Hi, I'm your new sensei, you are going to be a spying team with an emphasis on sneakiness, assassination, all that subtle jazz. Now, on your first ever day as ninja, let's learn Elemental Manipulation, and then I'll give you lots of flashy jutsu. It'll take you a few chapters, as in a few days or weeks if the author wants drama, even though it is supposed to take years for everyone who can't use the clone method. Not that we're supposed to know what that is yet."
- 'Sasuke-teme'. I can't remember Naruto ever saying that. -_-
And probably many more. ^_^
Re: fic pet peeves
(Anonymous) 2013-04-28 02:16 am (UTC)(link)- woobification of evil characters, using justifications of their behaviour, minimizing the stuff they've done. "oh, it was only one murder, and the victim was being annoying!" I LIKE THE FACT THAT THE CHARACTER IS AN EVIL BASTARD, YOU DON'T HAVE TO TRY TO FORCE THEM TO BE "GOOD" IN INCREASINGLY IMPLAUSIBLE WAYS TO DO SO.
- when a character is a little angsty & messed up in canon. in fanfic the character is a sobbing, helpless ball who can barely tie their shoelaces.
- portraying fucked-up relationships as "sweet" and "romantic", and it's not a crack-fic.
