Re: fic pet peeves
(Anonymous) 2013-04-28 02:16 am (UTC)(link)- woobification of evil characters, using justifications of their behaviour, minimizing the stuff they've done. "oh, it was only one murder, and the victim was being annoying!" I LIKE THE FACT THAT THE CHARACTER IS AN EVIL BASTARD, YOU DON'T HAVE TO TRY TO FORCE THEM TO BE "GOOD" IN INCREASINGLY IMPLAUSIBLE WAYS TO DO SO.
- when a character is a little angsty & messed up in canon. in fanfic the character is a sobbing, helpless ball who can barely tie their shoelaces.
- portraying fucked-up relationships as "sweet" and "romantic", and it's not a crack-fic.
Re: fic pet peeves
(Anonymous) 2013-04-28 03:08 am (UTC)(link)Ugh, this fucking cliche gave me so many problems in fandom, especially in Doctor Who and Avengers fic.
Particularly because the reason I'm so interested in angsty/messed up characters is because I have a family member and a couple of family friends who are combat veterans who have actualfax psychological demons clawing at the insides of their heads with somewhat understandable (if not totally logical) patterns and reasoning to them, and seeing similar issues in canon extrapolated by fanfic into random infantilized bullshit goes past annoyingly OOC and into kind of personal and insulting.
