This is a problem for me on an otherwise excellent character Tumblr I follow. Usually it's really good, but the author behind it obviously likes to shoehorn her political beliefs onto the character when there's even the slightest opportunity to do so. The character as presented in the original work is at most apolitical, and if you consider who the creator is, actually probably holds the exact opposite belief system. Meanwhile the author of the tumblr has made their own politics clear on their personal blog, so you can see exactly where it's coming from.

I just think it's bad manners to talk politics where no one's looking for them.

In the case you've described, it's not just bad manners; it's bad writing and bad role-playing.

A decent writer can pen a character who convincingly argues in favor of a position with which the writer him/herself disagrees.
