Well, the thing is, usually it's done so clumsily that you're like "cool story bro. Now what did that have to do with anything?" So even if I agree with the point, it's still annoying.

Yeah; I can't think of any time where this type of thing has been done well, even if I agree. It's rarely a marker of a good story, in any case.

Well... yeah, of course it is. And why should you feel bad about not reading something, especially if it's badly written?

(Anonymous) 2013-04-27 08:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Nah, I agree. It could in theory be done well, but usually it's just so over-the-top.

I wouldn't mind this shit so much if other characters could disagree with the author's opinions, and not be made into an over-the-top asshole or whatever.
Better yet, if they make a fool of the OC.
Not because I hate OCs or anything, but just because it's so fucking rare.

Although I don't think characters should be a mouthpiece for their creators, in the first place.
I realize that traits of a person can leak into their characters, and that's fine. But when they become the guiding light "voice of reason" for everyone else, then no. Stop. Shut up and go away.

What really pisses me off is that they said "amoral" when they seem to have meant "immoral".

I don't always think like this, but I'd be suspicious at some point too.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-27 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I remember reading a Ron/Hermione fic back in the day that paused the action halfway through to have Hermione (apparently a die-hard, evangelical Christian in her spare time) stop and pray for an end to abortion.

Funny how I must have missed Hermione's deeply-held beliefs on the matter in the actual books, because to me it seemed just a tad out of character.

This is a problem for me on an otherwise excellent character Tumblr I follow. Usually it's really good, but the author behind it obviously likes to shoehorn her political beliefs onto the character when there's even the slightest opportunity to do so. The character as presented in the original work is at most apolitical, and if you consider who the creator is, actually probably holds the exact opposite belief system. Meanwhile the author of the tumblr has made their own politics clear on their personal blog, so you can see exactly where it's coming from.

I just think it's bad manners to talk politics where no one's looking for them.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-27 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I do this too, and even on a much more petty scale. For example, in a fic I recently read, an OC started to randomly talk about how much they like Coldplay and how great they are, and suddenly all the other characters became Coldplay fans too, for not particular reason or connection to the plot.

I can't read this fic anymore, and I think it's still going on. It just leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

Seems normal to me. I have little patience for OCs to start with, if they are a soapbox character I back button out chanting "Mary-Sue, Mary-Sue, does everything so wonderful-ly" to the SpiderPigman theme tune.

Goes triple if it is a Military-Sue fic. I hate those.

I'm not sure what it's like for other authors, but I specifically write a lot of characters with different opinions than me, some even opinions I find rather problematic personally - if it works for the story.

Yes, some characters say things I personally agree with - but certainly not all.

I'd settle for a fanfic that just kept dialogue and speech patterns in character. For the love of god stop having anyone who isn't either a cowboy or a teenager using the word "figured" especially if they are English or British.

The better fics can endow characters with views the author takes on, or even views diametrically opposite to the author's, and not make them seem forced or unnatural.

I get what you're saying, I think. But as a blanket approach to reading, this seems kind of silly. I mean, what about OCs that have certain stances for the exact opposite reason? Maybe there's a homophobic OC thrown in to create plot tension for someone's favorite slash pairing, as an example.

Edit After reading through the other comments, I guess if that's the sort of thing you're talking about, I can definitely understand. I just never typically read fanfic with a lot of OCs, I guess.
Edited 2013-04-27 22:07 (UTC)

(Anonymous) 2013-04-27 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL one of my fics that's an AU with a lot of OCs (that are sorta kinda part of a new setting, a faraway boarding school) would leave you very confused because a few of them are activist types who hold very differing opinions. ( one if a sort of rival to canon character who is an activist type. The OC being a more immature obmoxious and pre character development version of her, to make the canon character see some of her own past faults and hypocrisies in the other girl and grow as a character.

But seriously though , it is easy to tell when an OC is speaking for the author. A Mary Sue will demonize every one who even slightly disagrees with her. When she puts down people an sighs when they don't get her ~genius insight~ . Anyone who disagrees who a horrible puppy punting bitch or bastard who couldn't possibly be right or a hopelessly incompetant iidiot. Oh and any guy who doesn't notice her is a shallow pig who's }ust not good enough for her". Characters like that piss me off and I usually give OCs a chance and the benefit of the doubt.

That's just bad writing in general. It always feels awkward to have a character just come out and say "X is WRONG!" (X being something controversial, and not something everyone thinks is wrong, like kicking kittens or something.) That's how Chick Tracts are written.

Persuasive fiction usually doesn't just flat out tell its audience what right and wrong is.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-28 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
Sounds a bit like what Kit Whitfield termed Letters To The Editor:

Letters To The Editor
Taking the opportunity to gripe about pet peeves that have nothing to do with the story. If, while the hero is searching the streets for the man who will tell him the truth about what happened to his father, he passes a house done up in a style he doesn't like and he spends some time reflecting on tacky decorating, the author has inserted a Letter to the Editor.

Not petty at all. I'm not reading a fanfic to read about someone's self-insert mouthpiece.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-28 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
It's annoying in any way really, so I don't blame you for wanting to drop it. Using an OC to push your beliefs on someone is just as irritating and do not want as is using an OC as a projection of yourself to hook up with a canon character.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-28 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
It's one thing when an issue like that is part of a plotline, like a pregnant character considering an abortion and seeking advice. But when it's just an opportunity for the author to "make a point", it's like being beaten over the head with a club, even if you agree with the issue in everyday life.

I read a fic like that, where a non-white canon character began lecturing a white canon character about her white privilege. Later the fic has the white character witnessing overt racism toward another non-white character and then there's this long narrative about how the non-white character was right about white privilege. I'm black and I've definitely had to deal with racism, but I felt it didn't work for that particular fic because is was really forced and took away from the main plot, which was already dragged out enough.

When a canon character in a fic espouses controversial/subcultural - and to my view OOC opinions or behaviors in a fic I also assume that the author is just expressing their own views.

I also judge them a little for being WRONG.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-01 03:30 pm (UTC)(link)
That's the thing. You don't have to read, watch, or listen to anything you don't like. If something bothers you to the point that you don't want to continue that piece of media, just drop it and save yourself some suffering.
