(Anonymous) 2013-04-28 12:57 am (UTC)(link)OC does not necessarily mean "Mary Sue." The only OC that AYRT described didn't sound like a perfect speshul snowflake to me. And AYRT talked a lot more about how they wanted to develop (not change, as that implies that the shift doesn't organically follow from the events in the story, but is instead "pastede on") the canon characters rather than anything about the OCs.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-28 01:39 am (UTC)(link)-Danny and Tucker deal with a roommate that doesn't know their secret ad trying to hide it.
-Sam deals with a boy she has liked and was getting close to finding a relationship with going back to an ex-girlfriend. She also has to room with this girlfriend who is one of the few people here she knows.
-Valerie likewise, has to deal with a girl who she has a rivalry with and who really likes her boyfriend and has known him longer than she has. This girl is her roommate.
-Jazmine has to deal with living with the two of these girls who both like her brother in one form or another. She also discovers that the community / school she's in has a less than favorable view of psychology , which is something she is interested in.
-Vlad (the series antagonist) finds a way to get something he has been wanting for a very long time, the affections of the woman he loved in college and getting his rival and teenage best friend out of the way to do it. But the person who's offering it to him has morally questionable methods and traits that make him take a hard look at himself.
Also I know a few well done fics that prove that at least partly untrue. The Alexandria Quick series for Harry Potter. It doesn't feature the HP characters, just the world, because let's face it , it's an interesting world, and I'm not going to just not explore the world because of what you think is "acceptable".
I think a lot of non-fanfic writers would find the idea that original characters and original content is considered "bad writing" to be completly and utterly fucking ridiculous. People might not want to read it? Sure. True.
Some people don't like reading sci-fi or fantasy books. Does that make them "bad writing"? Some people don't like books about a certain topic or time period they find boring. Are using those topics and time periods bad writing? Hell no.
So you can keep your writing standards for yourself. But don't try to state them as objective fact. Anything can be written poorly. Shipfic if often written poorly, and so is fanfic about just the canon characters, but neither of those are wrong.

That's what I was trying to say. the person I've been talking to seems to have just read some OCs they don't like and they're stuck in bitching mode.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-28 01:22 am (UTC)(link)We didn't change the motivation of the canons. Danny still wants to learn how to use his powers protect the city and maybe best Vlad so he doesn't hurt Danny's family. Sam has a thing for Danny, and wants to get away from her fundie-like parents . Vlad wants to get his lost love to marry him and murder the hypotenuse and finds a new way to do that.
The main pairing is one that showed up in canon.
Also , the whole "boost readership" . You keeping insisting that I have some ulterior motive for writing this. I did it because after a writing block it was the first time in a while I had fun. I showed it to someone they said it had potential and pointed out the errors, and I fixed them and put it up / wrote more.
Look I'm sorry I know it was probably tacky and in poor taste to mention it. I was pointing out that not all OC's with a strong opinion are necessarily the author's opinion. But at the same time it does happen a lot. So I apologize for going on about something of my own thing. For the record, it's clearly marked so It's not going to "fool" anyone into reading it. I just wrote it for the sake of enjoyment and being reminded why I write. There's no sinister ulterior plan here.
I just have to ask....you sound so angry about this. Does finding fic you don't like really just make you this angry? I would highly recommend sticking to recommendations in that case. That way you can cut down on reading stuff that annoys you, and hopefully regain your sense of basic courtesy.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-28 01:42 am (UTC)(link)But hey, I get it, you don't like OC fics and you knee jerk decide that any OC work is probably a self insertion fantasy. Okay great. That's why I label it. I'm not angry, just wondering why you are so intent on making sure I know that you hate the idea.
I get it already. Sorry I annoyed you.

I'm sorry I got the attentions of someone as rude as you. Not that I wrote a story I enjoy writing.

Yeah, we get that you don't like OCs. I'm not hurt, I just don't know why you keep coming back to "oh btw you suck"
I understand that. You're not going to make me cry or delete my fic. Sorry if I rustled your jimmies.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-28 01:52 am (UTC)(link)Re: SA
Look I apologized for bringing up my own fic. Yeah it was stupid. But now you're demanding that I take it down to prove how sorry I am. Bullshit, I'm not going to take it down. Things you don't like will exist.
Deal.
PS: I write completely original stuff in some places. a couple people were interested. (stuff I still need to do come to think >.>. Such a short attention span I seem to have) So I'm not really hiding behind fandom characters. I am writing about these characters because I like them. Like almost everyone else who's writing fic. You're just seeing what you want to see. Go ahead. If you want to think I'm some desperate person with ulterior motives , think that. You're certainly not hurting me.
