I think this is a great way to find new things. An amv about a show/pairing you follow can get you to listen to music you normally wouldn't, or things you just typically wouldn't come across. I've done this lots. About half my music collection I've bought based on AMVs where I liked the song and then looked up the artist.

The clips used from anime are usually the most interesting ones, so I think it's actually a really good way to catch new people's interest. I became interested in several anime (and other media) after watching some good videos.
