RESEARCH EVERYTHING. The detailed info available via the Internet these days is absolutely invaluable; Google Street View will also help you semi-familiarize yourself with the area, so you won't be totally lost when/if you get there (and might help you make the decision).

Also? Sell as much as you can, and arrive at your destination with the barest minimum stuff that you can. You'll have a start-up slush fund for unexpected expenses, and less stuff to move incurs less time and expense packing and moving.

Those are my only two tips. But I've rarely spent more than five years in any given place over the course of my rather lengthy life, so it's hard-won advice.

Also it doesn't hurt to scope out the potential job market and start sending out resumes while you're still in the planning stages.
