How do you move?

(Anonymous) 2013-04-27 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
And I don't mean how do you move from one house to another in the same town or even the same area. How do people move across state lines or across the country? And not for job related reasons or for family stuff but just because you're tired of where you're at, you're tired of everyone knowing you, you're tired of everything in your present location; everything about it is making you sick or depressed or just plain old unhappy and you want to start new elsewhere.

How...do you do this? How can I make this happen? ;^;

I've done this multiple times, and every time except one I just sort of ... went. Saved up a bit of money (enough to get you through a month or two of job hunting), find a place to live (this is easier if you know someone who already lives in the area, but not impossible even if you don't), and went.

Also, people will tell you that you can't run away from yourself bla bla bla, and that is partially true, but sometimes it is your environment that's getting you down and in that case getting out does in fact make you better. I don't know your situation, but it has worked that way for me.

I know this is vague, but I don't want to write you an essay, but if you have any specific questions, ask and I'll try to answer them. :)

I went online and found a place to rent for a month so I'd have time to find a permanent place, then I called Mayflower and arranged to have them pack up everything I own and store it for a month. Then I called them back and had them deliver it all to my new place.

I couldn't get a transfer where I worked even though they're a national company, so I went job hunting online and put in my notice when I found a job with a new company. This place was actually my second choice for where I wanted to live but I couldn't find a job in my first choice over the internet and couldn't afford to take time off my job to go there to job hunt in person.

Well, moving across state lines for a job really isn't any different from moving across state lines because you're unhappy where you are and want to change. Really, the only difference is that you'd probably want to have more money saved up if you're just showing up to a random city with no job lined up.

But presuming you're moving on a shoestring budget with no job lined up: If you're currently renting a place, best practice is to wait until a couple/few months before your lease is out and then arrange to not renew it and set a cut-off date for any utilities you pay. Pack the clothes and things you MUST take; pack the rest of the things you want to take that will fit in your vehicle; sell, give away or trash the rest, and drive.

When you get somewhere, spend a night or two in a fleabag motel (or find a restop or someplace you can sleep in your car) and start looking in the paper/on craigslist/through neighborhoods for roommates or apartments for rent. Former motels frequently do what's called an "efficiency apartment" which is basically a motel room turned into a studio with the addition of a cooktop. Start looking for work. The end.

But sounds like you might want to look into some counseling first.

RESEARCH EVERYTHING. The detailed info available via the Internet these days is absolutely invaluable; Google Street View will also help you semi-familiarize yourself with the area, so you won't be totally lost when/if you get there (and might help you make the decision).

Also? Sell as much as you can, and arrive at your destination with the barest minimum stuff that you can. You'll have a start-up slush fund for unexpected expenses, and less stuff to move incurs less time and expense packing and moving.

Those are my only two tips. But I've rarely spent more than five years in any given place over the course of my rather lengthy life, so it's hard-won advice.

This. Research and downsize.

Also it doesn't hurt to scope out the potential job market and start sending out resumes while you're still in the planning stages.
