The thing is, that's not how bisexuals themselves define it; that distinction was invented by other people and imposed upon them.

Yep. This is what bothers me about it. I've never identified as pan because so often it gets expressed as "gender doesn't matter to me," and in a world that is so sexist (as well as homophobic and transphobic) saying gender "doesn't matter" seems really short-sighted to me. But when I see people who are not bisexual trying to redefine my identity for me, I kind of have to just throw up my hands and call myself "queer".
