I wonder if that's a lack of ability on Day's part or a lack of diversity in roles she's offered.

i think it's a bit of both,but my money is on that she's playing herself every time. she has a vlog or something,and every video can be put in a show she's in and not seem random.

I imagine a lot of it's the latter - people know she's big with the "fan crowd", so if that's who they're paying homage to, that's who they call. Although she's had roles where she's been a bit different - Penny in Doctor Horrible was more of a granola girl than a a rabid fan, and in Dollhouse she was more of an action chick. But mostly she seems to be Syd (I think?) from The Guild with a different name. And even when she isn't, her roles are still clearly marketed towards Syd types.

Can't say for sure, but I think it's a lot of the latter. Right now she's pretty much marketing herself. She's got the Geek and Sundry shows, The Guild, the Flog, and random appearances that have built up quite a following. It stands to reason that anyone who wants to sort of cash in on that following or that type of crowd would be looking for Felicia Day the personality.
