I don't read anything under 3000 words (unless highly recommended) but I think 25K is about the max for a good shipping story. Much longer than that, the premise has to really grab me or I won't bother.

Yeah, this, pretty much.

But I will say I'd rather someone err on the longer side than the shorter - I am much more forgiving of something being too long than being too short. I honestly feel like there's no point in reading fanfic if I can't really sink my teeth into it. I don't know why that is it. I don't think it's especially rational. But with super-short fic, it just feels almost pointless.
