Do you prefer long fics or short?

(Anonymous) 2013-04-29 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I think I'm in the minority. I only read long multi-chapter fics if they're for a ship that's hard to find and/or the author is really good.

I'm the same! I'll take an exemplary fic in the 2-10k range over a 50k epic any day of the week.

ME TOO!

I don't have a lot of time for reading and I prefer to spend most of it on actual books, so when it comes to fanfic I'm more likely to read one-shots and fics with short chapters. Out of all the fics I have bookmarked, I think there's only two or three that have a wordcount over 20000.

I don't really have a definite preference. Sometimes I'm more in the mood for short fics, sometimes I'd rather read longer fics.

That's how I am, too. There's this weird threshold where a lot of good writers seem to end up writing a lot of short things, so they end up learning how to condense and plot a lot better for the long haul.

Nothing on writers who aren't standing on the threshold of professionalism, but but if I'm going to sit and read novellas and novel-length fic, it really has to hook me; quality and rarepairs are the two things that commonly make me do that.

Otherwise I'm all about quick, relatively succinct highs.

Long. I tend to overlook fics under 4k unless the summary sounds incredible or I'm familiar with the author (usually both). OR if the fandom is small/pairing is rare.

I do prefer long fics, though. 40-80k is my desired length, but anything over 10k will immediately pique my interest.

I prefer novel length. The first thing I do when I'm interested in a new fandom is search for fics with 100k plus words.

short.

Actually what I prefer most of all is several short fics tied together by the same (alternate) universe/story line.

I dunno, just usually I don't really have the time to sit and read a huge fic all at once. And stopping and continuing another day just always breaks the flow a little. so bite-sized stuff is perfect for me.

Re: Do you prefer long fics or short?

(Anonymous) 2013-04-29 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
It depends. I won't start something long if I don't have a lot of time right then - say, I just want to read a little before bed - although I might read something that may turn out to be very long but doesn't have more than a few chapters posted yet.

At the same time, some of my favorite fics are long ones and if I see that an author I like has started posting something that promises to be long-ish, I'll be over the moon. It helps if I either catch the long fic early-on as it's being posted in installments, or I am able to pace myself and parcel it out over a number of days (provided it is split into chapters - I once started reading what turned out to be a 50,000-word epic that was posted in one big gulp... and I stayed up way later that night than I had expected).

I guess my preference is for longer fics that are posted bit by bit over a period of time because there's just that much more of the awesome fic to love and the anticipation of the next chapter is part of what makes the experience delicious. That said, there are a lot of fairly short one-shots out there that I have loved, too.

Really long fics. Three times a week I have to do a three-hour commute on public transit, and I need to entertain myself somehow. But I like nice short fics too.

I'm not really fond of less than 1000k fics although I'll read them sometimes. Generally, if the writing's good, the longer, the better imo. I love me some long fics--it's my high (oooooh, a 100,000 word fic, I'm there giving it a try). I usually end up reading the 1000-2000k word fics by default though b/c those are the most common length ones. What I can't stand is those authors who write those shorties and have a good, intriguing idea, and the fic basically reads as a prologue/beginning/middle/ending, and then that's it. Not even a sequel/prequel planned. They call it complete. Drives me crazy. I learn to avoid those authors. Some shorties are good and feel complete in themselves, but too many don't imo and call for longer stories (even if it's just another 500 or 1000 words). The longer fics also keep entertained for longer so my fave short fic writers have a chance to have written more for me to read while I preoccupied w/reading the longer fic. Win win.

I don't read anything under 3000 words (unless highly recommended) but I think 25K is about the max for a good shipping story. Much longer than that, the premise has to really grab me or I won't bother.

Re: Do you prefer long fics or short?

(Anonymous) 2013-04-30 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, this, pretty much.

But I will say I'd rather someone err on the longer side than the shorter - I am much more forgiving of something being too long than being too short. I honestly feel like there's no point in reading fanfic if I can't really sink my teeth into it. I don't know why that is it. I don't think it's especially rational. But with super-short fic, it just feels almost pointless.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-30 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
I'll read anything, but prefer fics that are over 2000 words. If it's shorter than that, it feels more like a single scene than a complete fic. Usually I have no problem reading multi-chapter fics, but if it's currently something like 32/? chapters, I'm not going to bother, because odds are that it's never going to be finished.

I prefer all the fic.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-30 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
I read anything. But do tend ignore fic that are in the hundreds for word count.

I don't care how long it is as long as it doesn't drag. If it can't keep itself going at longer lengths then it should have never been that long to begin with.

For me, I like long fics only if I can tell straight away they'll be worth my time. I'll read the first chapter, and read a bit into it (maybe even see where the thing ends) to see if I'll want to spend time on this. Whereas I definitely read more short fics, even if the quality's not as good.

It depends on what I'm in the mood for. Usually, I read shorter fic just because I don't normally have the time to read longer works. But if the fic is really good or one of my OTPs, length doesn't matter.

I'll read anything if the summary appeals, but what lengths I go actively looking for can depend on the fandom. For Naruto and Hetalia, my absolute minimum search is 40k, but I really prefer 100k+, and I especially look out for chapters of at least 10k in length. For Harry Potter, I'll sometimes crave long fic, but I just adore drabbles and short oneshots and read more of those. For Majin Tantei Nougami Neuro, I have a definite preference for short stories, but these days, I mostly only read multi-chaptered fics for the Death Note fandom. For my others, though, I don't really have a preference. I'll just read anything.

If this thread is anything to go by, I guess I'm kind of weird. ^^

Short short short. My favourites are one-shots, but I do occasionally enjoy some medium (like, 4-10 chapters or so) fics. Only rarely will I get into a really long fic.

The longer the better if they are complete or the author has a good record for updating/maintaining the tale.

I read freakishly fast so longer means more fun to me. I cannot afford my book habit and God bless Calibre for its fanfic downloading add-on. I load long ones onto my Nookcolor and am good to go.

Medium-range. I prefer novella or shorter. I don't quite have the attention span for longfic, especially since a lot of them are posted in parts, and I want to be able to read something that's finished, too. So I end up reading either shorter fics, that are generally posted complete, or completed longfic.

Short, unless the author is really good and the story really seems to be worth my time.

Connected standalones are best, but oneshots are fine too.
