Depending on timeline, he could have said Jon was Brandon's (more believable he'd have a bastard than Ned, actually), but I actually meant shitty in terms of the personal ripple effect. Should have specified that.

I assumed that the promise Lyanna exacted from Ned was never to tell anyone at all, because both of them knew that Robert would never let a child of Rhaegar's live, and Ned kept that promise to the letter.
