That... isn't a new argument? Quite a lot of people make that argument.

Also, a noblewoman in Westeros doesn't go into a marriage with high expectations of fidelity. The actual problem was that Ned brought the kid home and raised him like a legitimate child. Catelyn wouldn't have felt threatened by a bastard off with mother and an allowance like all the other bastards in Westeros.

Also also, in a modern setting, failing to mention the existence of a child from a previous relationship is not equivalent to cheating. It's dishonest, especially if the question came up and there was out-and-out lying about it, and you can't expect to be all "surprise! you have a stepchild now!" and have everyone be good with that, but it's not the same thing as a child from an infidelity or a fantasy-setting bastard posing a potential threat to the line of inheritance.

There's also the issue that Jon was the result of an affair, not a previous relationship, and that Catelyn was forced to have the boy raised in her own household. In the modern world, pretty much NOBODY would be okay with her husband bringing home another woman's child and being forced to raise it alongside her own children. Thankfully in most places you can just walk away from the relationship, but Cat can't do that. This is Westeros.

I think part of the problem is that Cat is super resentful of Jon and Jon is resentful of Cat, so it makes it really unclear how they publicly treat each other. Between that, it's easy to assume that Cat treated him poorly (as opposed to just ignored a child that wasn't hers), but we don't have any hard evidence that she did.

She's not a bad person because she didn't love her husband's bastard. She's a bad person because she abandoned all of her OTHER children except, for some reason, Robb... the one kid she had who REALLY DID NOT NEED HER THERE. Meanwhile, the toddler goes feral, she just gives the fuck up on her comatose cripple kid, and for all she CLAIMS to want her daughters back, her behavior certainly does not reflect an attitude of giving any fucks about them.

The hate Cat gets is disgusting. I can't forgive her telling Jon he should have died instead of Bran (there's no defending that) but to blame her for everything that happened or believe all her characterization begins and ends in that sentence is ridiculous.

The person to blame in this situation is Ned. Not Cat. Not Jon. Ned put Jon in Catelyn's orbit. Ned chose to bring Jon home and raise him alongside his legitimate children in a world where that just DID NOT HAPPEN. Catelyn didn't have a choice in the matter. She had this child forced into her life while she was still trying to establish her own family and her marriage had barely gotten off the ground.

Ned could've made the situation slightly less awkward by telling Cat the truth about Jon's parentage. (Whatever that truth may be. I'm of the opinion Jon might be Benjen's, but we really don't know.) Ned probably had his reasons for keeping that from Catelyn and Jon and the rest of the world but it certainly didn't make things easier for Cat. She had to live with this question mark about Jon's mother and if Ned loved this other woman. That's not an easy situation in the best of times, let alone when your marriage is brand new and your husband is a virtual stranger you were forced to marry for political reasons.

So if you want to point fingers and blame someone for the strained relationship between Jon and Catelyn, blame the person who put them in that situation.

I really enjoy reading about Cat and I really like her as a character and her protrayal as a strong woman, but the more Cat stans whine about this, the more I am beginning to dislike her by association and I really resent that.

I'm sick and tired of hearing about it. Stop making Cat a goddamn poster child of "blame the man instead of the woman." Ned was careless, wrong, whatever, but Cat was still awful to Jon. End of story. Deal with it.

OP I totally agree. Cat had to choice but to be reminded everyday of what Ned did and there was nothing she could. She couldn't leave. Not like she can divorce him. But you are going to have a hard time getting Fandom to see her pain because most of them are too busy wanting to get into Jon's pants. So they vilify anyone who doesn't kiss his ass. And yes it was shitty thing to say that she wished it was him instead of Bran but people say shitty things all the time in a moment of incredible stress and grief.

In the books, right at the beginning, it mentions how she didn't care about the sex part and actually expected bastards, she just didn't want them near her and being raised with her own. She found it an insult. That's why I hated her from the beginning.

I am in OP's sister's situation: I'm the daughter from a previously-secret relationship. And I had move in with my father when my moother, long story short, was no longer able to even provide for herself, let alone me. His wife? Oh boy doesn't she hate me.

But while I guess I COULD try to understand her point of view, while I know she was hurt and that my existence is a continuous reminider... well, fuck her. She' treated me like shit for something I don't get a say in it. I cannot forget that, don't think I ever will.

And I hate Cat as well. She's an interesting character and all, but she hits too close home for me and I cannot warm up to her.

I love how butthurt people in the thread would expect a human being in a FICTIONAL BOOK to behave rationally and adult like in real life.

...ohwait...seems like even REAL LIFE adults don't always act rationally or adult in real life.
